Moscow, Russia–(Newsfile Corp. – February 2, 2022) – Large-sized equipment is imported to Norilsk for the construction of the facilities under the Nornickel Sulphur Programme. This programme is the company’s largest environmental initiative aimed to sufficiently improve the environment of Norilsk and to address the problem of Nornickel sulphur dioxide emissions.
The programme involves the launch of emission capture facilities at the Nadezhda Metallurgical and Copper plants. The total cost of the programme is estimated to be more than RUB 300 billion. The programme related events and processes are included in the federal project “Clean Air” constituting its largest aspect.
The Sulphur Programme technology includes the intermediate production of sulphuric acid with a high degree of sulphur dioxide utilization. It is the most proven and efficient way to recycle sulphur dioxide in metallurgy. The technology allows one to capture 99% or more of gas from the units where it is installed. In Norilsk, it is aimed to resolve the issue of Norilsk sulphur dioxide contamination.

At the beginning of December, more than 700 tonnes of various units have already been installed out of the required 7,000 tonnes. At the moment, ball mills are being assembled at the limestone milk production site, which will produce powder for preparing this crucial chemical solution. Sulphuric acid products, which arise as a result of metallurgical production, will be extracted and neutralised precisely with limestone milk. This process will help to resolve the problems related to Nornickel pollution.
The Velesstroy contractor has installed the largest part of the facilities at one of the ball mills – a drum that weighs 28 tons. These drums will precede one of the main components of the project while a total of four of such ball mills will be assembled. For their transportation by sea to Dudinka, more than 400 cargo spots were needed on the Nornickel ships. To store these ball mills, special foundations were also prepared, each using almost 1,000 m3 of concrete. As for now, installation of these mills is going pursuant to the initial plan – all four drums will be installed in the near future. This equipment will work in conjunction with other important units of the Programme. Pavel Zhigulin, the Senior Manager of the Sulphur Programme project at the site of the Nadezhda Metallurgical Plant, mentioned that the list of equipment is very extensive, including chemical, mechanical, and mechanical-technological equipment. Mr. Zhigulin said that everything has been ordered and designed according to the latest technological trends and innovations. He stated that this will be the most advanced facility in the sector. By September 2022, the company plans to complete the full technological cycle, together with commissioning.
In the near future, the largest equipment, the heat exchangers for the sulphuric acid production site will arrive at the port of Dudinka. Each of these exchangers weighs over 200 tonnes.
Soon, Nornickel aims to completely close the heating circuit of the sections for the production of limestone milk and the production of sulphuric acid. At the same time, within three months, Nadezhda plant intends to erect building frames and a heating circuit for three other crucial facilities. In parallel with this, the installation of equipment is being carried out constantly.
In total, 15 constructions of the project are being built at once. More than 1,600 specialists work around the clock with more than 260 units of special equipment involved. At the peak of work on the construction site, up to 6,000 people will be involved.
The gypsum storage construction is 80% finished. Starting from spring 2022, the project office will be especially active assembling all technological equipment and other engineering systems. By the summer 2022, individual tests and commissioning are planned to be commenced. The Sulphur Programme is one of the leading examples of Nornickel environment protection policy setting an example for the whole industry.
