Nagpur: Residents of at least six localities in North Nagpur are facing a unique crisis. First, they had tap water, but no motorable roads. On getting concrete roads, they are struggling to get water. Now, the new concrete road has been dug up to replace a water pipeline. So, now they have a damaged road, and no tap water.
“A recently laid concrete road was dug up to replace a water pipeline, which has affected water supply. It exposes poor planning and lack of coordination among departments in Nagpur Municipal Corporation,” said former Congress corporator Manoj Sangole.
The pipeline of the locality was damaged two years ago, when there were no proper roads. Just two months ago, NMC concretised internal roads in Shende Nagar, Manav Nagar, Awde Nagar, and Deepak Nagar in North Nagpur constituency by spending Rs2 crore. Now, the water works department has taken up the job of replacing the damaged pipeline.
The new road and pavement blocks have been damaged. The water supply in the locality too remains affected.
Sangole said this area is an example of no restoration work. “Once they dig, they leave the area in a shabby condition,” he said.
“Just a few months ago, the roads in these localities were concretised after being in a bad condition for years,” said Saraswati Ganguly, a local resident. The roads were closed for over a month, and all the residents had to bear with the inconvenience due to the slow pace of work. But finally, everyone was happy that they have a smooth road.
Two months later, the road and paver blocks along the sides have been damaged, said resident Vanmala Chawre.
Sangole said the mess started with a particular stretch at Manav Nagar getting contaminated water two years ago. As Orange City Water failed to locate the source of contamination, it decided to lay new pipeline not only in Manseva Nagar but also in adjoining localities. Sangole also wondered why the work of replacing pipeline was not taken up during winter season, when water demand is very low.
Now, residents of these localities are not only struggling with dug up roads but also lack of water supply. With no water in taps due to the ongoing work, tankers have been deployed.
On Saturday, TOI spotted residents of all age groups in these localities busy ensuring that no pot in their house remains empty when the water tanker arrived. “Residents are relying only on water tankers for their daily needs this summer, when demand for water increases due to soaring temperatures,” said Satish Sakhare, another resident.
OCW said that 4.5 km encroached pipeline at Manav Nagar and Shende Nagar was replaced under R&R. “New network charging is under process, which will resolve all water complaints of these areas,” OCW spokesperson said.
“We charged new network on April 21, and found some major hidden connectivity is passing through sewerage chamber. We disconnected all those. Today, we will again check water supply in these areas,” he said.
Some water supply issues are there, but we are taking utmost care and providing tanker water supply, he added.
