A new pilot project is aiming to keep citizens refreshed and hydrated, through a common street fixture.
The City of Ottawa recently installed its first hydrant drinking water fountain located on Somerset Street West.
According to a release, the fountain will be there for two weeks to gauge community interest and feedback before it’s rotated to different locations across the city.

“This seasonal water fountain was attached to a local hydrant and was tested and cleaned, and is now ready to use by residents, tourists and even their pets!” the City said.
A few municipal election candidates shared their support about the pilot project on social media.
Kanata-South councillor candidate Rouba Fattal tweeted support for the initiative in her ward and said there were many times she and her husband had to return home because there was no nearby water fountains for her kids to use.

Mayoral candidate Catherine McKenney also echoed their support in a tweet.

Laura Shantz, who is running for the Rideau-Vanier ward, tweeted that the lack of drinking fountains and public toilets is something she hears a lot about in her ward and hopes the initiative is expanded.

During the pilot project, the City will study the operational impact of the water fountain and the feasibility of installing more throughout Ottawa next summer.
“The City of Ottawa’s tap water is something to celebrate. It’s safe, refreshing and accessible right where you need it on-the-go. How cool is that?” the City said. “Hydrant drinking water fountains are a welcomed resource for those in Ottawa who are looking to refill their water bottles or take a nice cold sip of Ottawa’s tap water.”
