Melissa R. Cigarroa won the race to represent Laredo City Council District III on Tuesday outright, avoiding a runoff despite three other opponents.

Cigarroa took 2,426 votes, giving her 54.06% to avoid a runoff after obtaining more than half the vote.

Jerry Perez took second with 1,154 votes, or 25.71%. He was followed by Abraham “Abey” Lugo (724 votes, 16.13%) and Eric Wickstrom 184, 4.10%).

Prior to the election, Cigarroa explained why she felt she was the best candidate for the position and which issues are most important to her.

“I’m running for City Council because I believe I can positively contribute to the decision-making that will chart the future path of Laredo,” Cigarroa said. “My advocacy for clean water and air in Laredo has taught me how City government functions and the avenues of opportunity to change how the City meets the needs of all its residents.

“I will work for a Laredo that preserves and showcases our beautiful environmental treasures, creates opportunities for small business owners, and inspires our youth to get educated and find jobs that let them choose to stay in Laredo to raise their families. Clean water and clean air are vital to protect the public health and safety, and I will make them a priority if elected to City Council.”

Cigarroa will take the place of Mercurio Martinez, who served for the last four years.
