The month of April was proclaimed as “Water Conservation Month” in Marion County during the Marion County Board of County Commissioners regular meeting on Tuesday, April 5.

During the meeting, the commissioners were joined by representatives from the State of Florida and water management districts to make the proclamation.

Water conservation is an important part of living in Florida, and residents rely heavily on the Floridan Aquifer to provide clean drinking water. The commissioners highlighted the importance of preserving this resource to ensure that future generations will have a reliable source of clean water.

Marion County offers programs and educational materials year-round to increase awareness of the need for water conservation through water efficiency.

The county offers rebates to eligible residents for the replacement of old, high-water-use toilets with new, high-efficiency toilets. Replacing a low-efficiency toilet saves money for the resident and also helps to ensure that there is enough water for the future residents of the county.

According to a press release from the county, replacing a single low-efficiency toilet could save up to 8,000 gallons of water per year.

The county also has an Efficient Irrigation Rebate program available to residents. Eligible homeowners can maximize the efficiency of their outdoor water use by improving their existing landscape and irrigation system.

For more information on these programs and to verify eligibility, please contact Rachel Novak, Marion County Water Resources Liaison, at 352-671-8672 or via email: [email protected].
