Stocking the home with cleaning products can hit the hip pocket and the environment hard, especially when you buy things you don’t really need.
Disinfecting wipes are handy to have when you’re out and about, but unnecessary for regular household cleaning. They’re also a cost we don’t need and create extra waste.
If you like the concept of disinfecting wipes but not the price or impact to the planet, Aussie mum Carolina McCauley has an easy DIY solution.

The popular TikToker has shown how we can make our own using cloths and a few products you might already have at home.
Carolina starts by adding two cups of water, one cup of vinegar and half a cup of rubbing alcohol into a jar. She then adds 20 drops of essential oil, which she said is optional but a good idea if you want to mask the smell of vinegar.
Once you’ve made the mixture fill the jar with cleaning towels and then shake.

Then you can pull the wipes out of the jar as needed and start wiping down surfaces.
“They are fantastic for cleaning and smell great too,” Carolina said in the video.
The disinfecting wipes DIY was a hit with Carolina’s followers, who have viewed it 184,000 times. One fan even described the idea as “borderline genius”.
“I’ve done this for years and people always look at me like I’m insane. I’m not alone!” another said.

There were plenty of questions though with most asking about how long the cloths last after being soaked in the mixture.
“Probably a while, mould doesn’t like rubbing alcohol or vinegar. Personally, I’d make fresh once a week,” someone explained in the comments.
One viewer suggested an alternative if you don’t like the idea of leaving wet towels in a jar.
“You could just put the same mixture in a spray bottle and wipe with the dry towel,” they said.

Carolina has become known on social media for her love of vinegar as a cleaning product.
She has even made a separate TikTok video with a compilation of all her vinegar cleaning hacks, which is captioned “I’m never gonna stop”.
Vinegar is considered a go-to cleaner for people who want to use something gentler than chemical-based cleaners. Carolina has used it for cleaning the washing machine, dishwasher, microwave, bathroom and more.
