Signs of norovirus and when to seek medical help as vomiting bug rises

Experts warned of six symptoms to look out for amid a rise in cases of norovirus, widely known as the ‘winter vomiting bug’.

Norovirus is a stomach bug that causes vomiting and diarrhoea, according to the NHS. The health service warned is “can spread very easily”, including through close contact with an infected person, touching surfaces or objects with the virus on them before touching your mouth, and eating food prepared or handled by someone with norovirus.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is the government body monitoring outbreaks of the virus. It said outbreaks are rising as people “have begun to mix more” since pandemic restrictions were scrapped. Between March 7 and 20, reports of norovirus and rotavirus outbreaks exceeded (plus 2%) the “five-season average of the same period prior to the emergence of Covid-19”.

Outbreaks were high in educational settings, rising in care settings and “notably lower” than the pre-covid five-year average in hospitals, according to the latest weekly bulletin from the UKHSA. The agency previously warned there could be “unusual or out-of-season” increases of the ‘winter vomiting bug’ in the coming months.

According to the UKHSA and the NHS, six main symptoms of norovirus, that usually start within two days of infection, are:

  • feeling sick (nausea)

  • being sick (vomiting)

  • diarrhoea
  • high temperature
  • headache
  • aching arms, legs or abdomen

Professor Saheer Gharbia of the UKHSA’s gastrointestinal pathogens and food safety directorate, said: “Norovirus, commonly known as the winter vomiting bug, has been at lower levels than normal throughout the pandemic but as people have begun to mix more, the numbers of outbreaks have started to increase again. Symptoms include sudden onset of nausea, projectile vomiting and diarrhoea but can also include a high temperature, abdominal pain and aching limbs.

How to stop the spread of norovirus

The illness caused by norovirus usually goes away in roughly two days, but it “can be very unpleasant” while it lasts, the NHS website said. Professor Gharbia said: “Stay at home if you are experiencing norovirus symptoms and do not return to work or send children to school or nursery until 48 hours after symptoms have cleared.

“Please avoid visiting elderly relatives if you are unwell – particularly if they are in a care home or hospital. As with Covid-19 and other infectious illnesses, hand washing is really important to help stop the spread of this bug, but remember, unlike for Covid-19, alcohol gels do not kill off norovirus so soap and water is best.”

The UKHSA suggested other ways to help reduce its spread, including:

  • use bleach-based household cleaner, or a mix of bleach and hot water, to disinfect potentially contaminated household surfaces and objects, particularly after an infected person vomits
  • avoid cooking and preparing meals for others until 48 hours after symptoms stop
  • wash contaminated clothing or bedding using detergent at 60°C, and wear disposable gloves while handling contaminated items, if possible

When to seek medical attention

The NHS said you should seek advice from 111 if:

  • you’re worried about a baby under 12 months
  • your child stops breast or bottle feeding while they’re ill
  • a child under 5 years has signs of dehydration – such as fewer wet nappies
  • you or your child (over 5 years) still have signs of dehydration after using oral rehydration sachets
  • you or your child keep being sick and cannot keep fluid down
  • you or your child have bloody diarrhoea or bleeding from the bottom
  • you or your child have diarrhoea for more than 7 days or vomiting for more than 2 days

You should seek emergency medical attention via 999 or A&E if:

  • vomit blood or have vomit that looks like ground coffee
  • have green or yellow-green vomit
  • might have swallowed something poisonous
  • have a stiff neck and pain when looking at bright lights
  • have a sudden, severe headache or stomach ache

Greensboro’s 1,4 Dioxane discharge impacting Pittsboro’s public drinking water system

Pittsboro, NC – The Town of Pittsboro has received notice that the City of Greensboro has once again exceeded their Special Order by Consent (SOC) Year One Compliance Value maximum of 35 ug/L (micrograms per liter) pursuant to the Amended EMC SOC WQ S19-010. Municipalities with drinking water intakes downstream, including Pittsboro, were notified by the City of Greensboro at 2:43 p.m. via email on April 6, 2022 with a notification stating that a grab sample in Greensboro indicated a release of 1,4 dioxane at concentration level of 52.2 ug/L. The most current sampling information received by the Town reports the Patton Trunkline in Greensboro had a 1,4 dioxane concentration level of 95.1 ug/L from its April 4, 2022 sample collection date. Based on these elevated results, Greensboro has ordered the following industries to send their weekly composite for the week of March 27 – April 2 for RUSH analysis and report the results ASAP:
• Ecolab, Elastic Fabrics, Lanxess, Precision Fabrics, Vertellus

The City of Greensboro issued a press release (see below) stating that via trunkline monitoring, surveillance sampling, and self-monitoring by selected Significant Industrial Users (SIU), the City has identified a significant source on the Patton Trunkline. The SIU, Lanxess, notified the Greensboro on April
7, 2022 that elevated levels of 1,4-dioxane were found based upon receipt of self-monitoring results.
The Town is aware of the situation and continues to work with the City of Greensboro to sample and inform the public. More details will be provided as rush sample results from each sampling point are delivered. Based on the current level of contamination, as the Town and others seek to determine the current stream flow rate of the Haw River and sampling data, the Town of Pittsboro wishes to inform our citizens, residents, and water customers that levels of 1,4 dioxane in the Pittsboro drinking water source may exceed the EPA’s Drinking Water Health Advisory Level of 35 ug/L and to act accordingly.

EPA has identified 1,4 dioxane, a clear liquid that is highly miscible in water, as a likely human carcinogen. 1,4 dioxane has historically been used as a solvent stabilizer and is currently used for a wide variety of industrial purposes. For reference purposes, the EPA’s Drinking Water Health Advisory Level of 35 ug/L based on a 1 in 10,000 cancer risk for lifetime exposure. The Town encourages our customers to consult

The town of Pittsboro will continue to monitor the situation with additional precautionary sampling, and they will continue to discuss remedies with NCDEQ and the City of Greensboro.

City Issues Notice of Elevated 1,4-Dioxane Discharge to South Buffalo Creek
GREENSBORO, NC (April 7, 2022) – On April 5, the City of Greensboro’s T.Z. Osborne Water Reclamation Facility had an elevated discharge of 1,4-dioxane to South Buffalo Creek, a tributary of the Cape Fear River basin. This discharge does not affect Greensboro’s drinking water quality. One result of a split sample recorded a concentration of 52.2 micrograms per liter of 1,4-dioxane and exceeded the City’s Amended Special Order by Consent (SOC) compliance value of 35 micrograms per liter. City staff has notified and is in coordination with the NC Department of Environmental Quality (NCDEQ) and downstream utilities.

Trunkline monitoring, surveillance sampling, and self-monitoring by selected Significant Industrial Users (SIU) has identified a significant source on the Patton Trunkline. The SIU, Lanxess, notified the City today that elevated levels of 1,4-dioxane were found based upon receipt of self-monitoring results. A meeting was held today with Lanxess to discuss next steps. The company is an organic chemical facility that manufactures a variety of formulations. Lanxess does not use or store 1,4-dioxane as a raw material nor does it manufacture 1,4-dioxane as a finished product. The company has been working closely with the City and previous self-monitoring/City sampling results did not indicate elevated concentrations of 1,4-
dioxane.

Governor Hochul Announces FY 2023 Investments in Clean Energy Infrastructure, Climate Resiliency and Preservation

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced bold, unprecedented investments and environmental initiatives in the FY 2023 Budget. 

“This moment demands historic investments in renewable energy and environmental protection to bring us closer to a brighter, greener future,” Governor Hochul said. “Our unprecedented commitment to the pursuit of clean-energy alternatives and green infrastructure will supercharge our economy and advance our climate goals. Thanks to the help of Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and Speaker Heastie, this Budget solidifies New York’s place as a national leader in the fight against climate change.” 

Expanded Clean Water, Clean Air, and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act 

The Enacted Budget authorizes an additional $1.2 billion, for a total of $4.2 billion, for the landmark Clean Water, Clean Air, and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act. This historic initiative to be taken up by voters later this year, will provide the support New York needs to provide safe water to drink; invest in critical water infrastructure; restore critical environmental habitats; reduce flood risks; preserve our outdoor spaces and local farms; and invest in climate change mitigation and adaptation projects that will reduce air pollution, lower carbon emissions and improve the ability of New York communities to withstand the climate-driven increase in severe weather events and flooding. The Bond Act will also support a substantial investment in the Clean Green Schools initiative that will reach every public school located in a disadvantaged community.          

Environmental Initiatives  

In addition to the Clean Water, Clean Air, and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act, the Budget provides a record $400 million Environmental Protection Fund to support climate change mitigation and adaptation efforts, improve agricultural resources to promote sustainable agriculture, protect our water sources, advance conservation efforts, and provide recreational opportunities for New Yorkers. In addition, $500 million in clean water infrastructure funding is included, bringing the State’s total clean water investment to $4.5 billion since 2017. 

The Department of Environmental Conservation’s funding will increase by $15 million. This increase will go towards capital needs to improve state lands, rehabilitate campgrounds, and upgrade its recreational facilities, all as part of the Adventure NY program which connects New Yorkers with nature. This funding will also provide for health and safety repairs to state infrastructure, including dams, wetland restoration, state lands, and fish hatcheries. The enacted Budget also includes an additional $20 million in funding for infrastructure improvements at the state-owned Conklingville Dam.   

Consistent with the Governor’s commitment to protecting New York’s wetlands, the Budget includes essential improvements to the State’s wetlands protection program, safeguarding an estimated one million additional acres of unprotected wetlands habitat and helping New York adapt to increased flooding and severe storms fueled by climate change. 

The Budget includes an extension and expansion of New York State’s successful Brownfield Cleanup Program (BCP), which was set to expire in December 2022. The program is reauthorized for 10 years. The Budget improves the program by incentivizing cleanups in disadvantaged communities. Additionally, the program reaffirms Governor Hochul’s commitment to affordable housing development by expanding the universe of affordable housing programs eligible for BCP property tax credits, providing vital benefits to incentivize the redevelopment of brownfields as much-needed affordable housing. Further, the BCP now encourages the development of certain renewable energy facility sites, with new tax credits, to help focus BCP-driven redevelopment and meet the State’s ambitious climate goals  

Zero Emission School Buses     

In order to improve air quality for school-age New Yorkers, the State Budget requires that all new school bus purchases be zero-emissions by 2027 and all school buses on the road be zero-emissions by 2035. The State Budget will provide $500 million through the Environmental Bond Act to support school districts in purchases of zero-emission buses and related charging infrastructure including charging stations. Additionally, the State Budget authorizes school districts to lease or finance zero-emission buses for 12 years, more than double the current five-year limitation for diesel buses, in order to help districts meet this goal, and ensures Transportation Aid is provided on zero-emission buses and related charging infrastructure. 

The Budget will build on Governor Hochul’s commitment to bring environmental sustainability to New York schools. The Clean Green Schools initiative provided in the “Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act” will serve more than 1,000 public schools and benefit nearly 1 million students. The program will drive significant infrastructure upgrades, such as geothermal heating and cooling, solar, green roofs, and indoor air quality/ventilation. This vital investment will not only boost the state’s economy but advance climate justice by bringing clean energy and a healthier indoor environment to under-resourced public schools.  

Climate Friendly Homes   

As part of the Governor’s commitment to support the development of at least 1 million electrified homes and up to 1 million electrification-ready homes by 2030, the Enacted Budget provides funding for a $25 billion, five-year Capital Housing Plan that will create and preserve 100,000 affordable homes and electrify an additional 50,000 homes. 

Offshore Wind Investment 

The Enacted Budget includes a $500 million investment to develop the state’s offshore wind supply chains and port infrastructure.  This nation-leading initiative will create 2,000 jobs in a growing industry, while helping to make New York the offshore wind capital of the country. 

Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation Funding 

The Enacted Budget will increase funding for the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation by $140 million, for a total of $250 million. This increase will be invested into enhancing and improving New York’s State parks. This substantial level of funding will aid the ongoing transformation of New York’s flagship parks and support critical infrastructure projects throughout the park system.  

The funding will allow the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to continue its mission of providing safe, enjoyable recreational and interpretive opportunities for New York State residents and visitors. The Office functions as a steward of New York State’s valuable natural, historic, and cultural resources. OPRHP operates the State Park System, a network of 181 State parks and 35 historic sites. In 2021, the system welcomed a record 78.4 million visitors.     

The Department of Environmental Conservation and the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation collectively oversee 5.35 million acres of open space statewide, including 2.6 million acres in the Adirondack Park and nearly 300,000 acres in the Catskill Forest Preserve.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis awarded $3.255 million to the Town of Century Friday for economic development.

The Small Cities Community Development Block Grant will be used to renovate two community centers.

“This is a huge win for our community,” Rep. Michelle Salzman Said. “It is a testament  to the mayor working with all levels of the government to get big projects like this across the finish line.”

$1.985 million will be used for the historic Carver Community Center at 7040 West Jefferson Avenue to bring it up to code, renovate the kitchen and bathroom, install HVAC and air purification systems, install a new roof, pave the parking lot and for other building renovations. $850,000 will go to the Century Community Center (also known as the Ag Building) at the corner of West Highway 4 and Industrial Boulevard to bring it up to current building code, renovate the kitchen and bathrooms, install a new HVAC  and air purification system, install outside lighting and pave the parking lot. The metal building, constructed in 1992 is about 5,000 square feet.

The remainder of the grant will be used for engineering, architectural and administrative costs.

The grant is a significant amount for Century, close to their entire yearly budget minus other grants.

All total, DeSantis awarded $23 million Friday in Northwest Florida for infrastructure improvements and economic development. The $3.255 million for Century was the largest grant awarded.

The Town of Jay also received $300,000 to help with the renovation of the Bray-Hendricks Sports Complex.

Highly Poisonous Death Cap Mushroom Identified in Boise – Dailyfly.com Lewis-Clark Valley Community

The first confirmation of death cap mushrooms (Amanita phalloides) in Idaho was recently reported to the Idaho Division of Public Health. An amateur mycologist spotted the mushroom under an oak tree in an established neighborhood in Boise. DNA testing by a laboratory pathologist confirmed the identification. It may be present and undetected in other areas.

Death cap mushrooms are highly poisonous and cause the most deadly mushroom poisonings worldwide. They can look like edible mushrooms (such as paddy-straw mushrooms or puffballs), but eating as little as half a mushroom cap can kill an adult. A small portion can kill a dog. Cooking does not make the death cap mushroom safe to eat.

 Early symptoms of death cap mushroom poisoning are persistent and violent vomiting, abdominal pain, and profuse, watery diarrhea 6 to 24 hours after eating the mushroom. These symptoms generally last a few hours, after which there is an apparent recovery with no symptoms for a few days. Then jaundice, loss of strength, coma, and death can occur from liver failure and kidney failure.

Early treatment is critical to decreasing the chance of dying or needing a liver transplant.

If your pet has eaten a wild mushroom, call the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center’s 24-hour hotline at 888-426-4435 or your veterinarian or veterinary emergency clinic.

Death cap mushrooms are found near imported trees in gardens, parks, and urban areas but can spread to wild areas over time. In other regions, death cap mushrooms appear in late summer through December, or year-round. Seasonal risk in Idaho is unknown.

To help avoid spreading death cap mushrooms to other areas, remove the mushrooms from your lawn before mowing. Grasp the mushroom low on the stalk and pluck it from the soil.

 

There is no evidence that hand contact with death cap mushrooms is dangerous, but wearing gloves will protect your skin from germs in the soil. Wash your hands thoroughly after touching the mushrooms or surrounding soil.

Dispose of the mushrooms in the garbage. Do not compost at home or put it in the city compost cart. Do not put death cap mushrooms in wood chip containers or trucks. Clean and disinfect garden tools after using them around affected trees. Spraying will not eradicate death cap mushrooms.

Governor Hochul Announces Unprecedented Support for Education in FY 2023 Budget, Including $31.5 Billion in School Aid

Governor Kathy Hochul today announced the education highlights of the FY 2023 Budget. Part of the historic plan includes a record $31.5 billion in total school aid for school year 2023, the highest level of State aid ever, and $8.2 billion in support for higher education as part of this year’s Budget.  

“The opportunity to pursue a quality education is the silver bullet for so many New Yorkers,” Governor Hochul said. “With this budget we are going to unleash the power of higher education to lift up the people of our state by investing in our institutions and our teachers. Thanks to the help of Majority Leader Stewart-Cousins and Speaker Heastie, this unprecedented level of funding will broaden access to opportunity in New York and build the education system of the future.”    

Historic Education Funding  

The State Budget is reflective of Governor Hochul’s strong commitment to education by providing additional funding and services to meet the needs of students, teachers, and schools amid the pandemic. The Budget is providing $31.5 billion in total school aid for school year 2023, the highest level of State aid ever. This investment represents a year-to-year increase of $2.1 billion, or 7.2 percent, compared to school year 2022, including a $1.5 billion or 7.7 percent Foundation Aid increase, representing the second year of Governor Hochul’s three-year commitment to fully fund Foundation Aid. 

Universal Pre-Kindergarten  

The Enacted Budget increases the State’s annual investment in high-quality prekindergarten to $1.1 billion, an increase of $125 million, or 13 percent. With this funding, school districts will be able to provide access to high-quality, full-day pre-kindergarten across the State for approximately 17,500 additional four-year-old children.

Special Education Support        

Governor Hochul is also providing an additional $240 million in new funds and significant flexibility to the funding of approved special education schools. This new funding for the education of children with disabilities is accompanied by greater financial and operational flexibility in these schools to meet student needs. This initiative will provide transformational changes in how our most vulnerable children are educated.   

Academic and Mental Health Support   

The State Budget includes a total of $100 million of matching funds over two years to be provided to school districts and BOCES with the highest needs to address student wellbeing and learning loss in response to the trauma brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes support for extended school day or school year programs, afterschool programs, mental health professionals and other locally determined initiatives.  

Recruiting and Retaining Teachers   

The Budget includes funding for new initiatives centered around expanding the workforce for teachers, as well as expanding the means by which professionals from other careers may become teachers.  

The Budget creates a state teacher residency program to bring more teachers into schools sooner while providing greater opportunity for support and training as they embark on their careers. The State will also expand alternative teacher certification programs, such as the New York City Teaching Collaborative, to make it easier and more appealing for professionals in other careers to become teachers. Aspiring teachers would apprentice in high-need school districts while pursuing a master’s degree in their field. 

The Budget includes initiatives to upskill current paraprofessionals and teaching assistants. There are more than 100,000 paraprofessionals and teaching assistants in New York State schools—a number that is rapidly rising. The Budget will provide grants for paraprofessionals who remain employed in a school district to pursue a teaching degree. School districts would be required to pair candidates with professional mentors.  

In order to bolster the workforce and address the teacher shortage, the Budget will temporarily waive the income cap for certain retirees. There are 169,000 retired New York State Teachers, many of whom would be willing to return to teaching by waiving the current pension limit. Certain retirees would have the $35,000 limit removed, incentivizing teachers and other school workers to rejoin the workforce.  

Green Education  

In order to improve air quality for school-age New Yorkers, the State Budget requires that all new school bus purchases be zero-emissions by 2027 and all school buses on the road be zero-emissions by 2035. The State Budget will provide $500 million through the Environmental Bond Act to support school districts in purchases of zero-emission buses and related charging infrastructure including charging stations. Additionally, the State Budget authorizes school districts to lease or finance zero-emission buses for 12 years, more than double the current five-year limitation for diesel buses, in order to help districts meet this goal, and ensures Transportation Aid is provided on zero-emission buses and related charging infrastructure.  

The Budget will build on Governor Hochul’s commitment to bring environmental sustainability to New York schools. The Clean Green Schools initiative provided in the “Clean Water, Clean Air and Green Jobs Environmental Bond Act” will serve more than 1,000 public schools and benefit nearly 1 million students. The program will drive significant infrastructure upgrades, such as geothermal heating and cooling, solar, green roofs, and indoor air quality/ventilation. This vital investment will not only boost the state’s economy but advance climate justice by bringing clean energy and a healthier indoor environment to under-resourced public schools.  

SUNY and CUNY Operating Support     

Governor Hochul is providing more than $500 million in new SUNY and CUNY operating support. This transformational increase includes money for both systems and greater supports for students across the State. This includes $68 million of one-time debt service relief for the three SUNY teaching hospitals.    

New Faculty   

The State Budget provides SUNY and CUNY with $106 million—$53 million for each system—to hire additional full-time faculty at both four-year colleges and community colleges. This investment will fund additional full-time faculty— at SUNY and CUNY, including support for CUNY’s plan to convert adjuncts to full-time faculty. In addition, the Budget includes a $110 million increase to fund fringe benefits for SUNY and CUNY staff.  

Strategic Investments    

The Budget allocates $100 million for nonrecurring strategic investments—$60 million for SUNY and $40 million for CUNY—to improve academic programs, increase enrollment, enhance student support services and modernize operations.  

New Capital Support for SUNY and CUNY Facilities   

The Budget invests $2.2 billion in new State-funded appropriations for capital projects at SUNY and CUNY—$1.2 billion for SUNY’s State-operated campuses, $879 million for CUNY’s senior colleges, and $102 million for community colleges across the State.    

Part-Time TAP   

Governor Hochul recognizes that for many students, full-time higher education is not viable with other challenges like work or families. She also recognizes that many students need access to effective training courses to upskill in their current careers. To address this, the Governor is providing $150 million to expand the Part-time Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) to support part-time students in degree-seeking programs and non-degree training programs at community colleges.  

Supporting Community Colleges    

The Budget includes a funding floor to protect community colleges from the loss of over $80 million in funding from declining enrollment.    

Expanded Opportunity Programs for Students   

The Governor is providing a $30 million increase in funding for higher education opportunity programs and training centers, to ensure those students who face academic and economic challenges are positioned for success.   

Expanded Childcare on Campus   

The Governor is providing $15.6 million in start-up funding to establish childcare centers on all remaining SUNY and CUNY campuses. This initiative will greatly expand access to higher education for more individuals.

Poor indoor air quality really does affect your sleep. Making sure your room is properly ventilated with the right humidity can help you get a better night’s sleep. Too much humidity and you’re creating the perfect environment for dust mites to thrive and breed while you sleep.

City: Longview boil water order lifted | Local News

The city of Longview on Friday lifted a boil water order for residents.

Water samples collected received good test results after the boil water order was issued following a main water line break early Wednesday.

“This test confirms that the water in Longview is safe for consumption, following our recent citywide event,” Director of Public Works Dwayne Archer said. “I couldn’t be prouder of our crews that quickly isolated the issue and restored our system without any additional complications.”

City staff on Thursday collected water at two homes and sent the sample to be tested at a third-party laboratory. The city on Friday said the results were good, and that residents can again consume city water without first boiling it.

The city continued to flush the water system, it said in a statement. Residents who experience any discoloration in city water should run the system for a time to allow water to circulate.

Prior to consumption, the city suggested residents follow these guidelines:

Flush hot water faucets for 15 minutes and cold-water faucets for five minutes or until it feels cold.

Flush your refrigerator filter with a least a quart of water, or change the filter.

Automatic ice dispensers should be emptied of ice made during the boil order and run through a 24-hour cycle, discarding the ice to assure purging of the icemaker water supply line.

Run your dishwasher empty for a full cycle.

Change all water filters currently in use.

Residents with additional water issues should contact the Public Works Department at (903) 237-1240.

In a video posted Friday afternoon on city social media pages, Longview Mayor Andy Mack celebrated the end of the boil order surrounded by Public Works Department employees. He held up a clear plastic cup half filled with water and took a long drink.

“Longview, the boil ban has been lifted,” Mack said. “Yes!”

Mack thanked everyone involved in the effort and high-fived members of the crowd behind him.

“What I want to really say is this: Sometimes our heroes come in the form of police and fire; this week, it came in the form of Public Works. These are our heroes that put our city back together in just a couple of days,” he said.

Archer said in a statement Thursday that it was “the most significant water line break we have ever experienced.”

The boil water notice was issued shortly before 5 a.m. Wednesday following a break in a 30-inch water main along Loop 281 near Birdsong Street. In a video the city posted Thursday, Archer said the city became aware of the leak when operators started seeing a decrease in volume in city tanks. He said city staff then started driving the roads to find it.

“It took us a while to locate it. It was under a bridge, and it was night so it was difficult to find,” Archer said.

Crews found the leak at about midnight Wednesday and went to work to try to isolate the valves that would contain the leak, which would allow the city to bring pressure back up for the rest of its customers.

In the hours after the leak was discovered, some residents had no water as others experienced very little pressure.

“Once we started losing pressure in our system and it got fairly low, it became evident there may be some chloroform growth,” Archer said. “So, the state of Texas says, ‘Hey you need to issue that (boil order notice) within 24 hours.’ ”

The situation caused all three of the main school districts that service the city — Longview, Pine Tree and Spring Hill ISDs — to cancel classes on Wednesday. Pine Tree and Spring Hill ISDs resumed classes Thursday, while Longview ISD students returned Friday.

The water main break also sent residents scrambling for clean drinking water and businesses, especially restaurants, examining how to continue to serve customers.

Water distribution points were set up for residents to get free drinking water. Bottled water provided by Brookshire Grocery Co. was available Wednesday at the Longview Convention Complex, 100 Grand Blvd., and at the Longview Mall. The city on Thursday consolidated to just the Longview Convention Complex with bottled water and bulk water available for residents who bring water-safe containers.

A portion of North Longview was excluded from the boil water notice because it is in a separate “pressure zone,” the city said.

On Thursday, city workers restored pressure to the system and refilled Longview’s tanks. Crews opened fire hydrants across the city to make sure air is out of the pipes. Other staff visited residences to gather water samples to be tested.

Initial reports that the boil water notice would last at least through Saturday were revised after the city clarified Texas Commission on Environmental Quality requirements for it to lift the order. The city first said it needed two good reports on samples taken 24 hours apart then revised that statement to one sample.

Those results came Friday, and the city reported at about 11:20 a.m. that the needed results were back, and the order was lifted.

“I tell you, when you have a 30-inch water line break like that, that’s a significant break,” Archer said Thursday. And I tell you, it took engineering staff, it took the staff out in the field to isolate that, to go ahead and get it to where we can go ahead and pressurize up the system.

“It took employees at the plants, and I’m going to tell you that every one of those folks, everybody involved in that process has done an amazing job. And we were able to quickly, within 24 hours really, start getting those pressures back up and that’s amazing. They did a fantastic job. They really did.”
