The Switch is On is a statewide campaign launched in December 2021 to help Californians transition from gas-powered to all-electric appliances. The program helps residents tap into the environmental, economic, and health benefits that come with going electric by offering resources including local rebates and incentives, income qualifying programs, access to vetted contractors, guides to modern electric appliances, one-on-one assistance from electrification experts, and more.

Electrifying homes is a key step toward phasing out the globe’s reliance on fossil fuels, which is necessary to reduce the impacts of climate change, as well as mitigate the indoor air pollution and associated health risks that gas appliances cause in residents’ homes. MONTCLAIR, NJ — The Montclair Public School District is planning a bond referendum to pay for “critical health and safety facility needs,” including better ventilation, a problem that has been put in the spotlight because of the coronavirus pandemic, administrators announced Tuesday.

The superintendent’s office released early details about the plan:

“The bond proposal focuses on critical health and safety facility needs and invests in structural enhancements that impact student instruction. Funding this bond referendum will allow for all Montclair’s 11 public schools to improve their operations for the best interests of students and families. This investment in schools is an investment in the community of Montclair.”

Administrators continued:

“The district faced a significant challenge during the COVID-19 pandemic because of its very old buildings and antiquated ventilation systems. District administration immediately engaged architects and engineers to mediate these structural problems in such a way as to protect the health and safety of its personnel and students and maintain teaching and learning.”

However, the following issues still need to be addressed, administrators added:

• Inadequate ventilation systems

• Antiquated roofs

• Heating systems and boilers that must be replaced and other items that have deteriorated over decades of use

• Upgrades to classrooms for 21st century learning

In addition to the above upgrades, the referendum also includes upgrading classrooms to “afford our students opportunities to benefit from 21st century teaching and learning strategies,” administrators said.

Earlier estimated totals for the referendum came to $15.5 million, Montclair Local reported.

“Approving this bond is a necessary step to ensure our students have the benefits of safe, quality learning environments,” said board of education member Eric Scherzer, who serves as chair of the Finance and Facilities Committee.

“Our facilities have been neglected for too long, and it is time to address the present needs and to prepare for the years to come,” Scherzer said.

Superintendent Jonathan Ponds said that he, principals in the district and architects from Parette Somjen have been doing building walk-throughs and meetings since last year to triage facility projects in need of immediate action.

“Security features and indoor air quality projects are critical and non-negotiable,” Ponds said. “Our students deserve safe and healthy environments to learn and achieve their highest potential.”

“As you know, I believe all kids can learn and all kids are special, and now, in Montclair, we have an opportunity to prove that we will put our full weight behind this theory, and give our students the spaces and learning environments they need to make this theory a reality,” the superintendent added.

The Montclair Board of Education will hold a special meeting to discuss the referendum on Monday, March 28 at 6:30 p.m. at the George Inness Annex Atrium, 141 Park Street, with parking on North Fullerton Avenue. It can also be streamed live by using the link on the district website found the day of the meeting, or watched on Verizon TV33.

The aging HVAC system at the Western Fair District Sports Centre will be getting a much needed upgrade thanks to a nearly $500,000 financial boost from the province.

The Western Fair Association announced it received the $498,800 grant through the Ontario community building fund on Tuesday.

“The support received to renovate our existing HVAC system to meet new COVID-19 public health requirements is greatly appreciated, and will help us extend the life and maximize the use of this important sport tourism and community facility as we come out of the pandemic,” Whitney Crawford, the district’s director of events and recreation, said in a statement.

The Sport Centre’s HVAC system is 20 years old. Upgrades being made using the newly announced funding will improve ventilation to change rooms and common use areas. Rooftop units will be enhanced to increase filter efficiency and ventilation capacity and allow air systems to be rebalanced to ensure negative air pressure conditions within individual change rooms.

“I am happy to see the Western Fair District receive this well-deserved grant from the Community Building Fund,” said London North Centre MPP Terence Kernaghan. “The Western Fair District is an important bridge between our agricultural and urban community, and this fantastic investment in proper ventilation and indoor air quality is crucial for continuing to do this safely.”

The 160,000 square foot Sports Centre opened in 2001 and houses three NHL-sized ice surfaces, including one that has been retrofitted for year-round accessible sporting.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — The Clark County Department of Environment and Sustainability (DES) issued a season-long advisory for ground-level ozone pollution and wildfire smoke Tuesday that will be in effect from Apr. 1 to Sept. 30.

The seasonal ozone advisory is standard, but 2022 marks the first year that the department will also be issuing an additional seasonal smoke advisory. According to officials, the smoke advisory is necessary because wildfire smoke drifting into Southern Nevada has occurred in four of the past five summers.

Smoke can cause particulate matter pollution as well as influence ozone formation, officials said.

According to the U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), people who may be most sensitive to elevated levels of particulates include individuals with respiratory problems or cardiac disease, young children, and senior citizens. Exposure to ozone can irritate your respiratory system and cause coughing, a sore throat, chest pain, and shortness of breath, even in healthy people.

At ground level, ozone is a key ingredient of urban smog that can build up during the day in the hottest months of the year due to strong sunlight, hot temperatures, automobile pollutants, and wildfires.

“This is a necessary change to our seasonal air quality advisory due to the impacts of climate change, drought and other factors,” said DES director Marci Henson. “Wildfire smoke during the summer months has become the new normal for Las Vegas, right alongside ozone formation and we want to be sure the public is informed so they can make their best decisions moving forward.”

Here are some helpful tips to stay healthy during the season and help reduce ozone:

• Stay indoors when you smell or see smoke.
• Reduce driving whenever possible.
• Don’t idle your car engine unnecessarily.
• Limit outdoor activity and exertion when ozone levels are elevated.
• Change your indoor air filters frequently.
• Keep windows and doors closed, and run your air conditioning inside your house and car to filter smoke and particulates.
• Schedule activities for the morning or evening when ozone levels are usually lower.
• Fill up your gas tank after sunset, and don’t top off your tank.
• Turn off lights and electronics when not in use.
• Check air quality forecasts and updates.
