Mansfield officials have issued a boil water order for most residents after E. coli bacteria was recently detected in the Massachusetts town’s drinking water.According to the town, E. coli was found in a sample collected from the Mansfield Water Division’s water supply on Wednesday and received notification of that result on Friday.The boil water order will be in effect until the town has received three negative daily tests.Most Mansfield residents and Foxborough residents served by the Mansfield Water Division should boil their tap water for at least one minute or use bottled water. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes and food preparation until further notice.Food establishments with water served by the Mansfield Water Division must boil their water for five minutes.Any ice, beverages, formula and uncooked foods that were prepared with water from the public water system on or after Wednesday, Sept. 7, should be discarded.Mansfield residents who get their water from the city of Attleboro, however, do not need to boil their water. This includes all people who live on Bungay Street and the section of Balcom Street from Justin Drive to Gilbert Street, excluding Martha’s Way.In the meantime, the town has increased the chlorine at all water treatment plants and will be conducting resampling. Officials anticipate resolving the problem by Friday, Sept. 16.Mansfield officials will also be handing out free bottled water to town residents at the Department of Public Works Complex at 500 East St.Bottled water was distributed from 3 to 6 p.m. on Sunday and will be given out again from 2 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. People are being asked to bring a form of identification to verify their Mansfield residency.
