California Attorney General Files Lawsuit against Over a Dozen Manufacturers of Forever Chemicals

December 22, 2022 by Staff Reporter

LA Testing’s parent company offers water testing services and sampling kits to detect PFAS, often referred to as forever chemicals, from drinking water samples to protect California’s workers, the public and the environment.

Huntington Beach, CA – WEBWIRE – Thursday, December 22, 2022

Last month, California’s Attorney General announced he had filed a lawsuit against the manufacturers of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) for endangering public health, causing irreparable harm to the state’s natural resources, and engaging in a widespread campaign to deceive the public.

According to the news release:
PFAS are a class of thousands of toxic chemicals. This lawsuit concerns seven common PFAS that have been detected in drinking water supplies, surface waters, and groundwater in California: perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA); perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS); perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS); perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS); perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA); perfluoroheptanoic acid (PFHpA); and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA).

PFAS are man-made chemicals that have come under increasing scrutiny in recent years because many of the chemicals in this group do not readily break down in the environment and can build up in humans and animals. There is evidence, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), that exposure to some of these chemicals may cause a variety of health concerns. Just this past June, EPA released four drinking water health advisories for PFAS.

“The Attorney General’s Office reports that PFAS are pervasive across California’s bays, lakes, streams and rivers, as well as in its fish, wildlife and soil,” said Michael Chapman, Laboratory Manager of LA Testing’s Huntington Beach facility. “They go on to state that these forever chemicals can also be found in the bloodstream of 98% of Californians. This is why LA Testing’s parent company, EMSL Analytical, Inc., is pleased to offer PFAS testing from drinking water and potable water sources at their corporate laboratory in New Jersey. Testing services are currently available for 18 of these chemicals from water samples collected in California.”
