Making the following plea is Anne-Marie Hilbert, Arlington-Teosinte Sister City Project board member. The village in El Salvador no longer has adequate, clean drinking water.
Access to safe drinking water is a basic human right but sadly, not the reality in Arlington’s sister city, Teosinte, El Salvador. The Arlington-Teosinte Sister City Project (ATSCP) has launched a fund-raiser to change that.
Teosinte’s water is unfiltered and contaminated by E. coli, rust and lead and many faucets run dry six months of the year. Water brought home in large jugs from a central water source must be boiled before drinking, yet still contains lead and rust. Laundry is washed in the nearby river, polluted from farm runoff and animal waste and reduced to a stream from January to March during the dry season.
After 33 years,Teosinte’s water-delivery system has reached a crisis. For the past 21 years, the community has unsuccessfully searched for a partner to help them upgrade the system, appealing to government authorities and international organizations. Out of options, Teosinte has asked Arlington for help.
The plumbing in Teosinte must be urgently replaced and will cost $6,554. However, ATSCP has a more ambitious goal of raising $15,000 to help replace the entire water system; the plumbing in the community, a water purification system and six-plus miles of pipes that connect the village to the water source high in the mountains. To reach that goal we need the support of the entire Arlington community.
While Teosinte and Arlington are two very different communities, our 32-year history of solidarity makes us feel more like one large family. Families have a responsibility to help each other in times of crisis. ATSCP invites you to be part of that family and this amazing friendship by making a donation.
