If you’ve somehow saved up enough cash to put a down payment on a starter condo in the Toronto area, perhaps you’d prefer to give it all up for a single month’s rent at a particularly bougie two-bedroom apartment in the city that’s being advertised by its landlord for a ridiculously high price.

The apartment is probably one of the nicest in the city, but the rental rate is absolutely bonkers.

The condo on the ninth floor of the boutique building at 500 Wellington Street West is being touted as a “spa in the sky,” and certainly is unique, breathtaking and beautiful — but, at only two bedrooms, its rental rate of a staggering $19,000 per month (plus some utilities, no less) is certainly going to be too much for almost any tenant in the city to afford.

The unit is decked out beautifully with top-of-the-line everything and a ton of unique features.

Yes, you and however many roommates you can fit in the place to cover costs will get a private direct-access elevator and the most luxurious of fixtures and furnishings, from an infrared sauna to walk-in closets with refrigeration drawers.

There are also 10-foot ceilings, an Italian marble-clad kitchen, integrated air purification and aromatherapy systems, and “spa-like ensuites” that are meant to “create the ultimate environment for wellness and tranquillity,” the rental listing reads.

It also comes furnished with designer, expert-appointed furniture and decor.

Any normal person would probably feel a little out of their element in such luxe surroundings.

And, yes, the space is ginormous and bright, with three washrooms, a huge balcony and 2,440 square feet total.

It’s an absolutely exceptional apartment with more than you could ever dream of — but still… $19,000 per month?!

Anyone with enough money to pay that price in rent would more than likely just purchase a home (or a few) of their own.

You won’t need to bring your own furniture, but you will need to lock in for a year-long lease and pay some maintenance fees on top of your $19k a month rent.

Then again, with landlords charging nearly $3,000 a month for tiny generic bachelor units and some apartments without proper bedrooms going for a rate of $3,500, maybe this price isn’t unrealistic at all, and the unit will be filled with some very wealthy tenants soon enough.

Liza Springmeyer and her friends share an inside joke: Utah is great, they say, just don’t tell anyone.

That secret will be spread far and wide, though, if the Olympics return to the state as they are projected to as soon as 2030 or 2034. Considering how difficult it has already become to find affordable housing along the Wasatch front, and that the state is facing current and looming environmental troubles, Springmeyer sees the attention from their return as a source of apprehension.

So, she took her concerns to the top. She aired them at the first of two listening sessions held Wednesday by the Salt Lake City-Utah Committee for the Games, which is heading the effort to bring the international sporting spectacle back to the state.

“I think it has to be said,” Springmeyer, a Salt Lake City resident who is a consultant for nonprofits, said. “Maybe I’m just one person saying it, but I would hope that they’re hearing it in lots of different areas that we are growing and we’re reaching our limits here.”

Committee members heard from about 40 people over the two sessions, which were presented as an opportunity for the city’s residents and leaders to voice their concerns about, and hopes, for the lasting impacts a second Winter Olympics would have on the area. Some, like Springmeyer, voiced uneasiness about the attention and growth it could bring to the state. Others aired concerns and suggestions on topics ranging from housing and homelessness to equitable access at events to transportation plans to environmental stewardship and, yes, even to air.

The meeting was an addition to the six listening sessions the SLC-UT committee held in Summit County over the past month. Fraser Bullock, the president and CEO of the committee, said his group is gathering input with the intention of singling out a handful of issues on which to focus. He noted, however, that some broad issues, such as rent control, might be out of the group’s reach.

“We can’t solve every societal ill, although we would love to,” Bullock said. “We have to pick our spots. We’re going to have to choose a few key initiatives where we say, ‘OK, this is one where we are uniquely positioned to help,’” Bullock said. “But when it comes to clean air, absolutely [that’s a priority]. Because that’s part of the experience of the Games. Are we going to be able to see our mountains?”

Environmental stewardship in general is a high priority for the committee, Bullock said, noting the goal for the Salt Lake Games is to make them “climate positive.” It appeared to be a focal point for residents as well. A breakout group discussing sustainability and environment during the morning session, which was held over Zoom, drew nearly half of the attendees. In addition to improving air quality, discussions centered around educating visitors about the fragility of Utah’s environment, preservation of the Great Salt Lake and water conservation.

Perhaps most pervasive was trepidation that resorts in the Cottonwood Canyons, which already see heavy winter traffic, would host Olympic events. That was immediately squashed by Bullock.

“I’m giving you my personal guarantee that we will not use the Cottonwood Canyons,” he said.

The environment wasn’t the sole source of conversation, however. Another breakout group looked at equity and inclusion. Its participants wanted the committee to make both the Games-time events and subsequent community sports programs — such as youth skating camps — more accessible to rural and diverse communities. It also sought to highlight the achievements of LGBTQ and Paralympic athletes and coaches.

The topic of homelessness also sparked some impassioned pleas. Bill Tibbitts, the associate director of the Crossroads Urban Center, noted that many elderly tenants and families were displaced in 2002 when landlords raised rents for the month of the Olympics. He urged the committee to provide shelters and alternate housing for people who might find themselves in a similar situation during the next Games.

“If we as a community set the goal of ending unsheltered homelessness between now and the Games and had proactive steps for housing people who are displaced during the Games,” Tibbitts said, “that could be an amazing story in terms of what the Games accomplished in our community.”

Along those same lines, Richard Layman, a Salt Lake City resident who attended the in-person session held at Industry SLC, asked that the committee push for major policy and cultural shifts.

“Here’s this opportunity just to be quantum mechanics,” he said, “and to really change the whole way we do things.”

Bullock said that in addition to the handful of initiatives it takes on itself, he hopes the committee can be a conduit between the groups spearheading other major projects and the federal funds or policy makers who can help bring them to fruition. The Salt Lake Games, his group has promised, will be entirely privately funded except for federal dollars spent on security measures.

First though, Utah has to win the right to host another Olympics.

Salt Lake City has put its hat into the ring to host either the 2030 or 2034 Winter Games. It prefers the latter, though, since that gives it more separation from the 2028 Summer Games, which will be in Los Angeles. If the International Olympic Committee decides to award the 2030 Olympics to Utah anyway, that announcement could come as soon as December. That’s when the IOC’s executive board is expected to enter a targeted dialog with a potential host, which all but locks that city into position unless it cannot meet all of its obligations to the IOC. The IOC is expected to officially name the 2030 host next October.

The host of the 2034 Games is not expected to be named until at least 2024.

In addition to Utah, cities in the running for the 2030 Games include Sapporo, Japan, and Vancouver, Canada.

For her part, Springmeyer said she’s pro Olympics in Salt Lake City, but with reservations.

“Let’s make sure that this next one that we’re not literally airing our dirty laundry: horrible air quality and a lake that’s dried up and no snowfall,” Springmeyer said. “These are real risks that we could come upon. And so if we’re going to do this, let’s invest in making sure those things don’t happen and let’s make sure that they don’t happen not just for the Olympics, but for forever.”

ALLENTOWN, Pa. – In an unexpected move Wednesday night, Allentown City Council denied giving any funding to Coca-Cola Park for renovations being required by Major League Baseball.

The vote was sharply divided, with Daryl L. Hendricks, Cynthia Mota and Joshua Siegel opposed to the zero funding.

There was a bill before council since July to transfer $1.5 million to the stadium from the city’s allocation from the 2022 American Rescue Plan Act.

Councilwoman Ce-Ce Gerlach made a motion to amend the bill to reduce the allocation to $0.

Candida Affa, Natalie Santos and Ed Zucal supported that move.

In 2021, Coca-Cola Park was informed by Major League Baseball that several improvements would need to be completed by April 2023 in order to allow the Lehigh Valley IronPigs — a Minor League Baseball team — to continue using the facility.

Those improvements include a new entrance behind center field to alleviate pedestrian usage on IronPigs Way, an upgraded air purification system, improved players’ clubhouse facilities to accommodate up to 55 to 60 players, and accommodations for female coaches and female personnel.

The improvements are expected to cost about $10 million, and the $1.5 million request from the city was the final piece of the funding.

During the contentious hourlong debate, Siegel warned that council may be paving the way for the IronPigs to leave the city.

“Organizations like the IronPigs aren’t just business partners; they are not just economic development assets,” Siegel said. “They’re community partners, and so when we’re shutting the door on the IronPigs, we’re shutting the door on charitable contributions to sports leagues across the city that keep kids off the streets and keep them safe. We’re shutting the door on making sure that we finance baseball teams for our youth.”

“We’re going to be looking back in a year and a half from now,” Siegel continued, “and (if) the IronPigs are closing up shop, we are going to be the council and the administration that lost the IronPigs, and that’s going to be our legacy.”

Affa said she believes Major League Baseball is holding the city hostage.

“They have a lot of money, and they put zero dollars into this,” Affa said. “I know they’re good for the community. I know it’s a great brand. I’ve lost sleep over this, for God’s sake. We’ve discussed this so many times. I flipped and I flopped.”

By reducing the funding to nothing, Affa said that will leave more money for city needs.

“When it comes to our community, we need to take care of ourselves,” Affa said. “We need infrastructure. We need homeless shelters. We need police officers. I think this money should be spent on us.”

“This is owned by Major League Baseball, one of the richest organizations in the world,” she continued. “And you come hat in hand, asking us for $1 million?” 

Some Allentown residents argued that the city alone should not be solely responsible for funding the Pigs.

“They can reach out to other municipalities and say, ‘We are this short from our goal, can you pitch in?'” said Allentown resident Milagros Canales. “It should not just be on Allentown residents.”

Kurt Landes, president and general manager of the Lehigh IronPigs, made a final plea before council for funding.

“You know this is a project that benefits kids,” Landes said. “We work time and time again to do things that benefit the city of Allentown, so regardless that it’s a county-owned facility, the IronPigs spend millions of dollars to support Allentown nonprofit organizations. It’s a family-friendly, affordable location.”

“I agree that it is frustrating with Major League Baseball, but we are $1.5 million short, and the entire community has come together to support this project: the state, Lehigh County, Northampton County,” Landes said. “We’re proud to be in Allentown, and it’s hard to imagine that we will have zero support for everything that we do and aim to do for the entire community and for Allentown.”

Mayor Matt Tuerk reminded council that the park is in Allentown and that it generates revenue for the city.

“There is approximately $125,000 in taxes that are generated annually from activities at Coca-Cola Park,” Tuerk said. “And they have been there for the 14 years, which is about $1.75 million of revenue that has come to the City of Allentown at no cost to us.”

“The city has yet to invest in the facility and is now faced with a decision about investing in a facility that will certainly be here with our support for many years to come,” Tuerk added.

Prior to the vote on Coca-Cola Park, council voted unanimously to give Da Vinci Science Center $1 million from ARPA funding, which was a reduction of $1 million from what was initially requested and a reduction of $500,000 from what a special committee of council had recommended.

Da Vinci is currently in the middle of a construction project to develop a new 67,292 square-foot facility in downtown Allentown.

Initially in the discussion, Gerlach attempted to reduce the amount to $250,000, and Affa asked for the amount to be reduced to $500,000.

Both reasoned that the center has applied for grants which could equal the money being requested from the city.

However, in the end, council agreed to amend the bill to $1 million in funding.

Affa said she would only agree to the $1 million for Da Vinci Science Center if the funding for the IronPigs were reduced to zero.

A small business owner admits to having to use his savings to cover the costs of a new van fit for Bristol City Council’s incoming Clean Air Zone (CAZ).

Nick Dowling took over the family business, Dowling Business Solution, eight years ago, in 2014, from his dad who founded the business in 1980. Based in Brislington, the company has one van, a 2015 euro 5 diesel model which means it can omit up to 180mg/km of Nitrogen Oxide, exceeding the CAZ’s limit which permits Euro 6 (diesel) and Euro 4 (petrol) cars, taxis and vans.

Mr Dowling is faced with either forking out £ 240-a-month on charges, almost £ 3,000-a-year, or placing a £20,000 deposit for another van which can enter the CAZ.

“The council has made it very difficult for us, as a small business, to continue trading. We need to make multiple trips into the Clean Air Zone each day for jobs and collecting materials, they have made it impossible to do this with our current van and I will be dipping into savings to cover the cost of a new one.

“The current vehicle is in pristine condition, less than 50,000 miles on it, but I will have to sell it and take a massive loss financially as I cannot afford to be without a van both for work and my family life as me and my wife need it for personal use.

“Another issue the Clean Air Zone creates is getting rid of it. Despite it being in great condition, no one locally is going to purchase a van they cannot drive through the city centre in so I have to look further afield – none of this seems to have been thought through.”

As part of its £32million Government package to support businesses upgrading their vehicles, the authority insists up to £4,500 is available for vans. However, this is to be used to replace them with second-hand vehicles from dealerships approved by the council’s ‘finance partners’.

The council’s website reads: “Priority will be given to individuals, sole traders, charities and small businesses located in the Bristol City Council area and neighbouring areas, or with premises in the Clean Air Zone.

“You can use the funding to trade in your vehicle and buy a second hand vehicle from a dealership approved by our finance partners.”

“I would understand if I had a fleet of 10 vans, but I’m a South Bristol business owner with one vehicle. Luckily I can afford to use my savings but many will not be able to and soon customers will notice prices are through the roof to cover these factors.”

PORT CLINTON — The Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) is excited to host holiday-themed parties for the public to enjoy within our indoor air gun range — the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center — with fun prizes available for participants!

Located on the grounds of Camp Perry near Port Clinton, Ohio, the Gary Anderson CMP Competition Center features authentic Olympic memorabilia and other items from the career of celebrated American marksman, Gary Anderson, for guests to observe as well as an 80-point indoor electronic air gun range that regularly holds local, state and national events.

The climate-controlled facility also hosts Open Public timeslots every week, where individuals of all ages are welcome to fire upon the advanced target system for practice or fun. The range is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and by appointment Monday through Thursday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Children under the age of 18 must have a parental consent form signed and must be 8 years of age before they can participate in marksmanship activities. CMP staff members are always onsite to answer questions and to ensure a safe environment for all.

Outside of practice, the air gun range hosts a CMP Pneumatic Bench League — with a course of fire of 20 shots from a supported position at 300 yards reduced targets and 20 shots at 600 yards reduced targets— as well as a variety of Monthly Matches for those who are ready for competition! SALT LAKE CITY (ABC4) – As winter rolls around, so does inversion season, which usually happens between December to February. Inversion brings bad news: Pollutants from burning fuels become trapped near the ground, leading to poor air quality.

As a helpful guide, Salt Lake County Health Department recently launched a new online map that presents real-time air quality data from air monitoring sensors planted throughout the county.

The map, called AirView, displays readings from two sensor networks: AirU, a University of Utah air-quality measurement system, and PurpleAir, a Draper-based sensor manufacturer. TELLUS Networked Sensor Solutions, a local environmental health service developing air quality sensor technology, will take all measurements, corrects them based on local conditions and presents these results on the map. 

“AirView is another tool for people who live, work and visit Salt Lake County to be aware of current air quality in their immediate area so they can make informed choices about their health and activities,” said Corbin Anderson, SLCoHD’s air quality bureau manager. “Checking AirView can help you decide to avoid motor vehicle travel, wear a particle-filtering mask while outdoors or change your furnace filter to improve indoor air quality.”

AirView has more sensors than other map visualizations currently available, according to the press release. 

The dots on AirView represent a sensor planted. Beside the map is a “health alert” color scale that assigns a color to the dots based on the level of particulate matter (PM2.5) recorded at each location.

The higher the number on the scale goes, the more dangerous the air quality becomes. AirVirew currently shows that most locations in Salt Lake County have green dots, indicating safe air quality.

“Information is power, and this will help residents make good decisions to protect their health and businesses know when to encourage employees to work from home,” said Salt Lake County Mayor Jenny Wilson. “Air quality is something all families in Salt Lake County worry about and this is a great tool to have as we head into the winter and inversion months.”

Utah is notorious for its bad air quality. The Salt Lake CIty-Provo-Orem area was recently named the 10th most air-polluted place in the country, according to State of the Air, a study done by the American Lung Association. The Salt Lake City government has unveiled numerous action plans in the past to combat pollution.

Utah health officials would like to remind Salt Lake County residents that burning solid fuels is prohibited from November to March unless the Utah Division of Air Quality determines it is an “unrestricted action” day, which can be checked on the DEQ’s website.

The indoor air quality of your home or office has a direct impact on the health of your building occupants and staff. According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Americans spend approximately 90% of their time indoors. Although people can often sense pollution outdoors, indoor air contaminants, such as molds, allergens, and viruses, can be just as dangerous. Most people would not knowingly consume contaminated food or water, yet they rarely think about the indoor air they are actively breathing all day, every day! Testing for indoor air quality (IAQ) to understand the bio-contaminants in an indoor environment allows you to more accurately understand how to improve it.

There are multiple factors that contribute to poor indoor air quality. Regardless of where you live, indoor humidity can occur because of water leaks, moisture seeping in through crawlspaces, or moisture trapped in the air entering your home from the outdoors.

Additionally, poor ventilation contributes to poor indoor air quality. Inadequate indoor ventilation recirculates polluted air that can contribute to the buildup of bio-contaminants. Pets also contribute to poor indoor air quality from the contaminants on their skin, saliva, and urine. In addition to pet allergens, animals can bring molds, bacteria, environmental allergens, and other bio-contaminants inside from outdoors. Even if you are not a pet owner, pet allergens are tenacious and can be left behind by former pets who inhabited or visited the building.

Air quality is something everyone should care about, as even the smallest issue can create large-scale health challenges.
