Famed poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882) wrote of “joy,” our positive word for this week: “Into our lives in many simple, familiar homely ways, God infuses the element of joy from the surprises of life which unrepentantly brighten our days and fill our eyes with light.”
Many of us, along the volunteer path, have a standard response to the greeting, “Hello, how are you?” Usually, “Fine, thanks!” But what if our response was “Joyful!” Would it change our thoughts, the way we view ourselves, our life? In my home, on the wall of my bedroom above my bed, hangs a ceramic plaque given to me by my daughter which says, “Do one thing every day that makes you happy.” Today, my one thing is writing my joyful letter to each of you.
Joyfulness is a choice we make as we come alongside our volunteer friends, sharing fundraising ideas to meet the needs of others in our community and beyond. Never a burden or a duty, but out of loving concern for others. It can easily become contagious as we share it with family and friends.

Our interactions with others are more meaningful when we choose joy and welcome exciting creativity when planning our projects of service to others.
Joy spreads and inspires. The poem, “Ode to Joy,” by Friedrich Schiller, is one in which the author’s words of joy inspired Beethoven’s “Ninth Symphony,” which is often used in movies to raise the energy level of joy.
With each day’s gift of life and the opportunity it brings to share the joy of loving kindness with a simple smile, a good word, or a kind deed, we can be strengthened joyfully.
