Clean Drinking Water for Kallukuzhi Residents

October 20, 2022 by Staff Reporter

Clean Drinking Water for Kallukuzhi Residents

The people living in this small village in the suburbs of Coimbatore have a sparse supply of clean drinking water. The villagers get a drinking water supply once every 20 days and that too for 8 hours at night from 11pm to 8am. There are 50 families in this local community and someone from each household has to bear the burden of queueing up for hours in advance to ensure they can fill their water pots. Typically, women and girls are responsible for water collection in 80 percent of households. The residents say that even after going through this grievous ordeal of queueing for hours to fetch water, it will leave most families in the village with little or no water for their drinking and cooking needs. They normally get a saltwater supply for 3 hours every few days and the unfortunate few who don’t get enough water will manage with salt water. The villagers say there is a general rota, so the same families don’t suffer water scarcity all the time. The residents say sometimes they pay for water tankers to deliver additional water, but the water supplied by the haulage companies is turbid and doesn’t meet drinking water standards as the concentration of impurities in the water is well above the safe limit.

We want to provide the villagers of this with access to pure drinking water for their daily drinking and cooking needs. We also want to alleviate their current need to manage with salt water or turbid water delivered by water tankers. Our goal is to ensure the availability of a sustainable source of clean drinking water in this village. Our goal is in line with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 6 – Clean Water and Sanitation for everyone.

Atmospheric Water Generators developed and manufactured by VayuJal Technologies Pvt. Ltd is an affordable water extraction solution that will provide access to pure drinking water for the villagers in an environmentally sustainable way.
