The Colorado River Indian Tribe have extended their “Safer at Home” resolution through March 31. This resolution is intended to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. It includes a mask mandate for indoor public areas on Tribal lands and regulates the size of types of public gatherings.
This came as the Tribes announced March 2 that three new cases had been reported among Tribal members since Feb. 23. There were 19 cases in the week leading up to Feb. 23.
There have been 1,782 Tribal members who have tested positive for the virus at Indian Health Services. With just over 4,500 members, the Tribes are approaching 40 percent of their membership who either have or have had the virus. Like most Native communities in the nation, they have been hit harder than the U.S. population as a whole.
There have been 26 coronavirus-related deaths among Tribal members.
A statement on the Tribes’ Manataba Messenger Facebook page states, “The CRIT Reservation Wide Face Mask Guidance mandates the wearing of face coverings by all persons on the Colorado River Indian Reservation, whether or not fully vaccinated, in any indoor location outside of one’s home. Businesses located within the Colorado River Indian Reservation shall continue to ensure staff and customers use face coverings within their establishments.”
Businesses on Tribal land include Walmart; Safeway, CVS Pharmacy and the stores in the Moovalya Plaza Shopping Center, and the two Running Man Fuel locations.
The statement on the Manataba Messenger Facebook page includes the following:
“The best ways to protect yourself are to take certain precautions including:
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Wear a face mask when you must leave your home to conduct essential tasks.
• Avoid close contact with anyone outside of your immediate household.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces. Cover your cough or sneezes with a tissue and immediately discard the tissue in the trash.”
