Mumbai: Customs officials have busted a drug racket where marijuana was smuggled in from the US through courier and arrested three people. The Airport Special Cargo Commissionerate seized Rs 27.5 kg marijuana worth Rs 8 crore in illicit markets in the period April 22 to 25. The contraband was concealed in air purifier, outdoor waterfall, fake wood leather chair and propane gas fire pit table.
Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman in a tweet congratulated the officials.
John Montero, a resident of Kalyan, Ashish Bharti from Kalchowky and Sunil Pawar from Satara have been arrested. Based on the specific intelligence officials intercepted a courier which originated from the US meant to be delivered to an address in Andheri. The package was intercepted and 910 grams of marijuana originating from California was found concealed in an air purifier. Officials then intercepted three more parcels originating from North America. The parcels were imported through a courier company in the name of John Montero and Ashish Bharti.
Officials recovered high quality hydroponics marijuana weighing 27kilograms. The first parcel contained 20 kgs of green plant purported to be ganja/mariujana. Another parcel contained 4.5 kgs of dry roll balls of green plant purportedly to be marijuana. During investigations it transpired that one of their friends Bhavesh Thakur had taken the KYC of one of the accused and booked the parcel in his name and was aware of the contents of the parcel.
