Mussoorie: Digging of roads for laying of pipelines for the Rs 124 crore Yamuna-Mussoorie drinking water project is causing hardships for the local residents. Residents complain that the Mall road and other roads of the town are being dug by without any notice and then they are not being repaired properly. Mussoorie Municipal Board (MMC) chairman has given an ultimatum to the Peyjal Nigam, the implementing agency, to repair the Mall road by March 31.
“Several roads were repaired after pipelines were laid but now deep potholes have developed on those roads as the repair work was not properly done. Moreover the repair work is being done after much delay,” complained a resident who did not wish to be named.
“Instead of digging up the road every now and then we should have a service duct on the major roads, especially the Mall road, with hume pipes so that indiscriminate digging of the roads is avoided,” suggested Sandeep Sahni, president of Uttarakhand hotels association.
Moreover, residents also complain that the implementing agency has not shared any plans of this project and the public do not even know where the lines will be laid and how the water distribution would take place.
“We do not know anything about this project and there are even speculations that the water would be supplied to Dehradun. The implanting agency should meet the stakeholders and share the project details,” Sahni said.
Meanwhile, MMC chairman Anuj Gupta called a special meeting on Wednesday with the Peyjal Nigam officials and gave them an “ultimatum to repair the dug up Mall road”.
“I have directed them to repair the dug up Mall road before March 31 and also told them that they will not dig up any other road before the repair work of Mall road is completed,” Gupta told TOI.
Notably, in the past, too, residents have been complaining regarding lack of transparency in project implementation and poor quality of work.
Under this project water from river Yamuna would be pumped up to Mussoorie to fulfil the drinking water requirements of the town that faces water scarcity during the summer months. The project has an outlay of Rs 124 crore.
