Phillip Cavanagh, the son of former Detroit Mayor Jonathan Cavanagh, an attorney and former State Rep. and Wayne County Commissioner has set his sights on being the new U.S. Rep. for Dearborn and the surrounding areas.
“Michigan’s new 12th U.S. Congressional District needs a representative that will work to build trust, respect and relationships in order to deliver results to all the people of the District,” he said in a statement. “This will include someone with a vision for the future and willing to compromise to get results while never losing sight of the core values of all families in our region.”
The primary election is set for Aug. 2.
His Michigan House district included Redford, north Dearborn Heights and portions of Livonia. The new U.S. House district includes Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Livonia, Westland, Redford, Southfield and part of Detroit’s west side.
On Dec. 28, the Michigan Independent Citizens Redistricting Commission voted to approve new congressional districts for the 2022 election. That caused several current representatives to change districts and have to run in new areas.
Debbie Dingell, who currently serves the 12th District will move to the new 6th District to stay with the majority of her constituents, and also pick up new areas like Ann Arbor.
Tlaib, who currently serves 13th District is making the move to run in the 12th District, which will include Dearborn and Dearborn Heights, Livonia, Westland and Redford in western Wayne County and Southfield from Oakland County. A few portions of west side Detroit neighborhoods also are included.
“To the residents of the current 13th Congressional District who have reached out to me since the maps were announced, please know that no matter if you’re in the new 12th or 13th, our work together will continue,” Tlaib said. “I am excited about the opportunity to expand our work to include more communities that want the same access to a better quality of life, including clean air and water, affordable housing, economic justice, and more. Our work is only going to gain momentum and become stronger every day.”
Whoever wins, will be the first person without the last name Dingell to represent Dearborn in 90 years.
“The current 12th District of Michigan has been my home and my community for decades,” Dingell said. “For seven years, I have had the honor of serving the hardworking men and women of this district in Congress, and I will run for reelection to continue that work. The nonpartisan redistricting committee drew new maps for legislative seats and there will be significant changes throughout the state. The vast majority of my current district, and approximately 60% of my current constituents, will fall within the newly drawn 6th District, but it will no longer include Dearborn. It has long been clear that Dearborn would be incorporated into a voting rights district with communities in Detroit, and I have always believed representation matters, so I will not run in a VRA district.”
When first elected seven years ago, Dingell took over the 12th District from her husband, John D. Dingell Jr. who had represented the 12th District (though the number had changed and communities included modified slightly over the years,) since Dec. 13, 1955. He served until Jan. 3, 2015.
He first won office in a special election, taking over for his own father after his death. John D. Dingell Sr. held the office from 1933 to 1955.
The new 6th District includes Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti with parts of western Wayne County, including Canton and Plymouth, as well as parts of Downriver (Grosse Ile, Trenton, Riverview, Woodhaven and Gibraltar) and Novi.
With Tlaib running in the 12th District, that leaves the new 14th District open for a race between all new candidates. That district is mostly Detroit, but includes Melvindale, Allen Park and other areas of Wayne County.
Former Democratic gubernatorial candidate and current state Rep. Shri Thanadar has announced his candidacy for that seat.
