NCE has joined forces with Wavin to bring you a free webinar to consider the potential of sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) to improve water quality in the UK.
The new Environment Act firmly placed sewage overflows into UK rivers and coastal waters firmly in the spotlight and sets out a framework for change, including placing a duty on government to publish a plan by September to reduce the frequency, duration and volume of sewage discharges.
In the face of more extreme weather events due to climate change and without additional funding to drive this change, alternative ideas and collaboration is going to be essential. This webinar, taking place at 11am on 25 May, will explore the potential opportunities SuDS could offer by attenuating surface water run off and reducing the risk of sewage being released by combined sewer overflows.
An expert panel of speakers will set out the scale of the problem when it comes to the impact of surface water volume on sewage overflows and the challenges ahead if it is not addressed soon.
The group will look at projects that have already successfully implemented SuDS solutions and worked collaboratively to reduce surface water flooding and examine the factors behind those achievements.
Some of the questions that will be addressed include:
- Exploring the factors that lead to successfully implementing SuDS solutions
- A review of who has responsibility and should bear the cost for greater adoption of SuDS to meet the demands of the Environment Act – does it lie at the door of water companies or the local authorities?
- If the lead party and funding can be agreed, what framework is needed nationally to ensure change is delivered at a larger scale than site by site?
