Golden Gem Ficus, Asian Council Tree, lofty fig

USDA Hardiness Zone: 9-11

Golden Gem ficus (Ficus altissima “Golden Gem”) is a beautiful hybrid. In warm tropical weather of its native habitat, it can grow to a very sizeable tree — up to 100 feet.
In central Ohio, Golden Gem ficus is a houseplant that spends winters inside. It grows as a tree or a multi-stemmed shrub.
The thick leaves are oblong with a slight point at the end. The leaf coloring makes this plant beautiful, with a base of emerald green and wonderful variegations of bright green and lime green. The lime green brightens to almost a chartreuse color.
Golden Gem ficus is a great air purifier and performs well in containers. It’s a houseplant must.
See Golden Gem ficus in the Dorothy M. Davis Showhouse as part of the Orchids exhibition at Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Gardens.
