THERE is no good time for a clogged drain.
Dirt, hair, and other gunk accumulates over time and can stop your water from flowing through the drain, often surprising you at the worst moment, when you’re out of clog removers like Draino.

Whether it is your kitchen or bathroom sink, a clogged drain can create quite a mess, and cleaning it can be costly. If a pipe snake and clog remover are out of budget or don’t work effectively, don’t worry, TikTok user and registered nurse, Jamie Tutson, has the answer for you.
Tutson, who goes by the handle healingjamie on TikTok, had a clogged drain for months. To avoid taking apart the sink after two attempts of clearing it using Draino, she found a simple solution. A solution involving inexpensive and everyday household items.
The first thing to do when unclogging a drain is to get all the standing water out of the sink says the Killeen Daily Herald. Use paper towels if necessary.
After Tutson’s sink was dry, she squeezed dish soap around the drain at the bottom of the sink.

Tutson used Dawn Dish Soap which can be found at convenience stores like Walgreens for $1.
Once the soap casually made its way into the drain, the registered nurse powdered copious amounts of baking soda in the same spot as the soap was poured.
A good baking soda like Arm & Hammer can be found at most convenience stores for under $1 dollar as well.
“As a base, baking soda dissolves organic compounds like dirt, grease and other sticky ickies,” says LiveScience.

“In addition, the mineral structure of each baking soda particle provides a gentle abrasive to clean without leaving scratches behind.”
Tutson then used a distilled white vinegar over the baking soda.
According to LiveScience, the mixture of vinegar and baking soda “unlocks an effervescent fizz of carbon dioxide that cleans and freshens drains.
A 64oz distilled white vinegar can be found at Target for $1.99.

Tutson’s final step was to pour boiling water down the drain to clear out any loosened gunk.
After waiting for a few moments, she checked to see if it worked.

“My faucet hasn’t drained that fast in months,” she writes on her TikTok.
Clogged drains can lead to aesthetic and structural damage, leaking pipes, insects, and costly repairs.
Most importantly, it can lead to harmful odors and health issues according to Art Plumbing, Air Conditioning, and Electric.
“Remember that the ever-present odor will have an effect on the indoor air quality of your home,” says Art Plumbing. “Skin irritation is another side effect that can happen if the clog is severe enough.”
