Lucknow: UP Jal Shakti minister Swatantra Dev Singh on Monday said the work to provide pure drinking water to every household in 66 districts of the state is going on a war footing under the first phase of Jal Jeevan Mission.
Giving details of the progress of Har Ghar Nal Yojana, Singh said that potable water supply has been started by giving water connections to over nine lakh houses under the new schemes across the state.
After repairing connections given under old schemes in the state, over 16 lakh houses have been given water connection afresh. He said the government has allocated Rs 3,70,000 crore in five years. “This will ensure that every household gets water from the tap. In rural areas, including inaccessible hills, people should get clean drinking water,” he said.
“Even after 70 years of independence, people had to yearn for water. Women had to fetch water from miles away in the scorching sun. Mainly the women of Bundelkhand had to face many troubles,” he said. Singh said that before BJP came to power at the Centre, only 16% of households in the country had access to tap water, whereas in just two years after the launch of Jal Jeevan Mission, 49% of households received potable water from the tap. The Centre has fixed the target of providing pure water to every villager by 2024.
