Kolhapur: Several major localities in the Kolhapur city and suburbs, from Tuesday, will get tap water supply on alternate days for the next two months.
The Kolhapur Municipal Corporation (KMC) has decided to cut down the supply of water due to reduced efficiency of the pumps fitted at Shingnapur pumping station. Earlier, the alternate day cuts were mainly due to dip in the water level at Shingnapur barrage along Panchaganga river, which was either caused by reduction in discharge from upstream Radhanagari dam or due to leaks at the barrage.
Now, the leaks have been plugged and the dam has adequate stock of water despite huge quantity getting wasted during the recent incident when one of the automatic gates of the Radhanagari dam got stuck and remained open for several hours.
All major areas like Rajarampuri, Salokhe Nagar Jarag Nagar, Shenda Park, Kalamba Filter and Rajendra Nagar are the ones that will get supply on every alternate days.
Ajay Salokhe, chief hydraulic engineer of KMC, said, “The capacity of the pumps is 25 lakh litre per hour. However, since most of the pumps are old and some have technical issues only 18 to 19 lakh litre is getting pumped. The areas which will face alternate day cuts are at higher elevation and they don’t get water if the pumps are not working at their highest capacity. We will need at least two months to change, install and repair rest of the pumps. Therefore, we have decided to initiate supply only on alternate days.”
He added, “Citizens must ensure that they use water judiciously. Water tankers will be deployed in these localities to get the tanks of the apartments filled if no water supply takes place.”
