It appears Ecobee, the Canadian smart home accessories maker, will soon release a new version of its SmartThermostat with an air-quality sensor built right in.

The leak of the upcoming product came in the form of a hidden image in an update to the company’s iOS app.

Ecobee SmartThermostat will feature built-in air-quality sensor

Ecobee’s update to its iOS app last week included a hidden image showing the SmartThermostat with an indoor air-quality indicator on its screen. Not only that, but the updated app has descriptions reading, “keep your home’s air clean with your Smart Thermostat’s built-in air quality sensor” and “your sensor is calibrating to your home.”

MacRumors uncovered the image and language in the app’s code.

No details about the upgraded SmartThermostat are known, as Ecobee hasn’t announced it yet. But it seems likely the sensor will activate a home’s HVAC fans when indoor air quality falls to a certain level. That will help circulate fresher air.

Ecobee thermostats used to work with air quality sensors made by Await+. However, that integration ended in 2020.

Ecobee’s SmartThermostat supports Apple HomeKit. And the product gained Siri voice assistant support last year — the first third-party hardware to do so. The thermostat’s regular price is $249.99. But it’s currently on sale for $199.99 at Amazon.
