The officers spotted a vehicle with the occupants violating safety belt laws. Neither the driver nor the passenger had their seatbelts on. The officers gave chase and as he was attempting to flee, they allegedly saw a loaded .380 handgun being thrown from the vehicle. Troopers recovered the weapon and were able to pull Smith’s vehicle over again on St. Stanislaus Street. Smith and his passenger, 28-year-old Chase Smith, were taken into custody. Each man was hit with multiple charges,
Criminal Possession of a Weapon 2nd Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd Degree for having previous convictions, Unlawful Possession of Cannabis, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 7th Degree, and Obstructing Governmental Administration.
The driver also received a charge of Unlawful Fleeing. They were both taken to the Monroe County Jail. They will be arraigned on the charges against them today.
