Puerto Rico Celebrates Air Quality Awareness Week

May 9, 2022 by Staff Reporter

Zimmetry Environmental provides indoor and outdoor air quality testing, monitoring and consulting services to identify and mitigate exposure risks to airborne pollutants.

Bayamon, Puerto Rico, May 2nd, 2022 — Since 2007, Air Quality Awareness Week (AQAW) has been recognized in Puerto Rico and throughout the United States. AQAW takes place from May 2nd to the 6th and the theme for this year is Be Air Aware & Prepared! The annual event is supported by AirNow, the home of the U.S. Air Quality Index (AQI), and partners such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), NOAA National Weather Service, U.S. Forest Service and U.S. Department of State.

The week-long campaign promotes events that increase air quality awareness and encourages people to check the Air Quality Index daily. Each year, specific daily topics are announced to educate the public about how the air they breathe can impact their health and quality of life. For 2022, they include:

·         Wildfires & Smoke

·         Asthma and Your Health

·         Citizen Science & Sensors

·         Environmental Justice & Air Quality

·         Air Quality Around the World

One of the topics that has been covered multiple times during Air Quality Awareness Week is asthma. A recent study by researchers from the University of California San Francisco and the City University of New York found that Puerto Ricans have some of the highest asthma rates in the world, affecting approximately 14.2% at some point in their lives.

“Air Quality Awareness Week is the perfect opportunity to educate the public, workers and employers about asthma and common triggers to help people avoid attacks and manage the disease,” said Harry Pena, President of Zimmetry Environmental. “There are a number of asthma triggers many people are exposed to in their daily lives. These include tobacco smoke, dust mites, mold, outdoor air pollution, cockroach allergens, pet dander, various chemicals, fragrances, and smoke from burning wood and grass.”

To help in these efforts in Puerto Rico, Zimmetry’s industrial hygiene and environmental professionals provide air testing, monitoring and consulting services to identify and mitigate exposure risks to biological and chemical asthma triggers, allergens and respiratory irritants. Zimmetry also recently sponsored an educational video about Air Quality Awareness Week that can be seen at: https://youtu.be/XRzwmVzZspE
