Sri Lanka requests UNICEF’s support to provide clean drinking water to children in rural areas

Jan 28, Colombo: Sri Lanka’s Minister of Water Supply and Drainage Vasudeva Nanayakkara said he has requested the UNICEF to provide support and knowledge needed to constantly provide country’s children with high quality clean drinking water for the protection of child health.

The request has been made when the new Country Representative of the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to Sri Lanka Christian Skoog met with the Minister at the Ministry of Water Supply and Drainage recently.

The discussion between the UNICEF representative and the Minister specially focused on the health problems of young children.

Recent statistics have confirmed that children in many parts of the world are frequently exposed to a variety of diseases due to lack of access to safe drinking water.

The Minister pointed out that this situation still exists in many of the most difficult areas in Sri Lanka and that the Water Supply and Drainage Board and the Department of National Community Water Supply have already implemented a number of special programs to address this problem.

He said that Reverse Osmosis (RO) water purification systems have already been installed in areas where such diseases are prevalent and a number of other areas will be fitted with RO filters under this water purification program in the coming months.

UNICEF Sri Lanka Representative Christian Krug said that UNICEF will provide all possible assistance to conduct an island-wide survey on water quality, develop databases on the nature of groundwater, to improve the quality of drinking water especially in schools.
