Postpone your lawn watering, car washing, laundry and other water-intensive chores until Tuesday afternoon, the Champlain Water District is advising Chittenden County residents.
The district issued the alert Sunday following an unscheduled slowdown at its water treatment facility, according to a press release.
The conservation measure affects about 75,000 residential and business customers in Colchester, Essex and Essex Junction, Jericho Village, Milton, Shelburne, South Burlington and Williston.
Ample supplies of pure drinking water are likely to remain on tap, the district release states, but dialing down non-essential use will ensure that county’s water tanks topped up — a critical factor in fighting fires.
Burlington residents are unaffected by the alert; the city’s department of public works has its own water purification plant.
Both utilities draw water from Lake Champlain, hundreds of feet from shore.
