BANGOR — The Bangor Water District is in the final stages of its ozone system upgrade.
The ozone system helps remove color from the water during the disinfecting and treatment process.
So far, the new equipment has been installed and workers are now trying to get the system automated.
However, there have been a few glitches in the programming, which is why the project may take longer.
City officials were hoping to have the new system installed by February of this year, but now it could take a little over a month or more.
Bangor Water District General Manager Kathy Moriarty reminded residents that the yellowish hue in their water is not a cause for concern.
“Our source of supply, Floods Pond, it does have a slight yellowish color and so while we are going through this ozone upgrade, we don’t have the advantage of ozone taking out that color,” Moriarty said.
“The water is perfectly safe to drink. We have tons of disinfection in our water but we will very soon be having that crystal clear water as soon as we get our ozone system back online,” she said.
Moriarty said because the Bangor Water District has more than 200 miles of pipes, it still could be several weeks before residents on the outskirts of the city notice a change in the color of the water once the ozone system comes back online.
