West Lafayette city facilities getting $50,000 air-purification system

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The air in West Lafayette government facilities should consist of fewer airborne pathogens and unpleasant odors, thanks to an approved $50,000 air-purification system.

The West Lafayette Board of Public Works and Safety also approved road closures within the city.

The installation of UV air-purification systems throughout West Lafayette’s 11 city facilities were approved at Tuesday’s board meeting.

These air-purification systems will include “Safe Air UV,” which will “protect visitors and employees from harmful airborne pathogens and unpleasant odors as well as improving performance of HVAC equipment by keeping internal components clean,” the memo to the board said.

The systems will be installed based on both material and labor availability, said West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis.

“It will be done as quickly as possible,” Dennis said. “As long as the material and the labor is there, we will get it done.”

The Safe Air UV will cost an amount not to exceed $50,276.78.

Road closures

Closure of Stadium Avenue between Salisbury Street and Maple Street would allow for tree removal on Tuesday. The closure only lasted for the duration of Tuesday.

From 4:30 to 11 p.m. April 28, Steely Street, west of South Grant Street, will be closed to allow for a Resident Life Block Party. This approved request was made on behalf of UR Boiler Apartments.

A fire department elevation

West Lafayette Fire Chief Jeff Need presented to the board a request to elevate Thomas Clark from an entry-level firefighter to firefighter first class on Tuesday.

“Firefighter Clark has successfully completed his probationary year and all requirements within the department to elevate his rank,” Need’s memo to the board stated.

This request was unanimously approved by the board.
