Editor’s note: We don’t typically publish blogs from outside contributors, but the piece below was sent to us by a local parent whose child is likely to be rezoned to “05-C,” Boca’s new elementary school. This parent learned more about what’s to come at the new school to alleviate concerns about the transition for students who will be rezoned, and thought that other local parents could benefit from having more information as well. We agreed.

While driving down Military Trail or overhearing playground chatter, you may have learned that Boca is getting an exciting new elementary school, which is being referred to as “05-C” until an official name is revealed.

The City of Boca Raton donated the land (thank you!), and with a soaring budget of 30 million dollars, the district hired respected firm Zyscovich Architects, Inc. to conceptualize this state-of-the-art building.

Zyscovich is best known for its commitment to sustainability and LEED principles within their designs and an expansive portfolio that includes Pine Crest School’s renovations and our future Brightline Station. Like the many innovative educational institutions they’ve created, the planning of the new school takes a holistic approach and focuses on the student’s overall learning experience.

This will be Boca’s first new elementary school since 2001, and it’s way overdue given Boca’s population boom. An additional elementary school will alleviate the overcrowding at nearby schools. Therefore, whether or not your child will be a founding student of the new school, it’s a win for everyone!

Here are some of the features families can expect:

TEACHERS KIDS KNOW AND LOVE

• Principal Seth Moldovan, the previous and beloved principal of Verde K-8, has been appointed to lead the new school.
• The faculty will include teachers from Calusa Elementary and Verde K-8 who are enthusiastic about joining their fellow students in this move.
• Moldovan considers hiring an integral part of his job and will focus on teachers who cater to the needs of each individual student.

SAFETY FIRST

• The new school will include an advanced security system, which has emergency buttons in all classrooms that notify the main office in addition to the school district and police, resulting in rapid response times.
• The Safe Schools Institute is physically located on the new school’s campus. The Institute houses the offices for The Department of Safe Schools and School Police.
• The building’s high-efficiency system enhances indoor air quality. 
• Promoting more outdoor time will be done with the addition of al fresco dining and open-air learning.

STELLAR CURRICULUM & PROGRAMS

• An application will be made to incorporate Cambridge International Education‘s “Cambridge Primary” beginning in the 2023- 2024 school year. This globally recognized curriculum allows teachers to focus on subjects based on the individual student’s strengths and interests. Over 10,000 schools in 160 countries currently offer this successful program.
• Moldovan is a huge supporter of the arts and plans to have a strong music and fine arts program.
• The school will have a full-time gifted program and Accelerated Math Program (AMP). 
• Designed to get kids moving, the school includes a P.E. pavilion, large playing fields and 2 brand new playgrounds, one for grades K-2 and one for grades for 3-5.
• A dream for working parents, there will be an extensive aftercare program with an array of extracurriculars (cooking, coding, sports, cheer, dance, etc.)

DESIGNED FOR A BETTER EDUCATION

Highlights include:

• Say it with me: No. Portables.
• Stadium seating in 4th and 5th grade classrooms to reduce that back-of-the-classroom feel
• Audio enhancements in the ceiling so children can hear teachers clearly
• Media center with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the lake
• Art studio, outdoor art patio and music room
• New style desks that can be easily reconfigured to create different groupings
• Modern technology including wall-mounted flat panel screens, brand new Chromebooks and 3d printers

Founding families will get the privilege to be part of something new and shape an institution, not only for their kids, but for many years to come. So, who’s going to “05-C” in August? As of today, the boundary lines have yet to be finalized, so stay tuned to see if you’ll soon be calling this brand new school home.
