The General Manager, LASEPA, Dr Dolapo Fasawe, disclosed this to newsmen on the sidelines of the official kick-off ceremony for the “EKO Clean Air” project on Saturday (not recent) in Lagos. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the project is “Breathe Clean Air Now”.

Fasawe said the figures were derived from a report which recorded the impact of air pollution on the health of residents, saying the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had been very deliberate and proactive in its resolve to deliver clean air and sustainable environment to Lagos residents.

She noted that upon resumption, the governor prioritised health and the environment in the administration’s THEMES agenda “because there is no good health without a good environment.

There was no such requirement when in 1952, the same Lagos won the first prize in the British Commonwealth as the city with the cleanest water

“Eko for Clean Air is preaching prosperity, good health, increased GDP and increased productivity for the people of Lagos State. We are currently in Itedo community and the response has been mind blowing.

We did Air Quality Study before this intervention and we also did something called the K-A-P: Knowledge, Attitude and Practices and we realised that a lot of persons did not know the effects of air pollution on health.

“So, as regards our coming here to preach clean energy and recycling, the people are excited and they are committed to partnering with the government on the project. As you can see, the government is teaching the people the practice of waste to wealth by buying the plastic waste, E-waste and used oils from them, thus putting money in their pocket”.

She said LASEPA would return to the community in four weeks to measure the air quality and ascertain their compliance with the practice already established.

“If they had listened to us, and they are practising what we have taught them, the air will be cleaner.

“We will not stop to see plastic bottles on the road because Lagos State is leaving behind a permanent plastic recycler in this community. Everyday, bring your plastic and you will be paid right there for used plastic,” Fasawe said.

The general manager said that the state government intends to replicate the project in the 57 local government areas and LCDAs before the end of the administration of the present government.

She urged the people of the community to use rechargeable lamps instead of kerosene lanterns, use gas instead of firewood and reusable bottles for drinking water instead of sachet or bottle water.

NAN reports that 500 cooking gas cylinders, 400 rechargeable lamps and 1000 reusable bottles and bags were distributed to residents of the community by the government.

The climax of the occasion was the commissioning of a borehole facility with 80 in-built water treatment gadgets built for the community by the government.”

In this seedy and claustrophobic cauldron of grime, filth, ruin and remnants we nevertheless have to deploy our fierce and feisty navigational skills. There was no such requirement when in 1952, the same Lagos won the first prize in the British Commonwealth as the city with the cleanest water.

It was Dr. Ladipo Oluwole (an old boy of King’s College, Lagos) who travelled all the way to Australia to collect the glittering trophy and the generous accolades plus the inspirational encomiums. But back then, the population of Lagos was just a little more than two hundred and fifty thousand.

Now, we are twenty-million during the day and twenty-five million at night (without including the living dead !!) Besides, in the 1950’s Lagos was blissful, serene and had no debts.

In addition, fresh air was freely available to both the rich and poor who had no qualms about walking up and down the Marina just to enjoy the breeze. Now, the air is foul and the debts keep mounting.

Officially, Lagos owes N780.5 billion according to the data published by the Debt Management Office. The mandate of the Debt Management Office does not extend to hidden debts or hidden doubts not to talk of hidden depths.

In the meantime the government has unleashed terror and terrorism on the J.K. Randle family. It commenced with stealth in 1969 and gathered momentum in 1975 with the compulsory acquisition of vast tracts of our land (286.4 Hectares). Here we are, almost fifty years afterwards we have not received a dime in compensation.

It is prime location which stretches over Alausa/Agidingbi/Ikeja. In Surulere, the “Shell Club” (Adeniran Ogunsanya Street) and the adjoining Nigerian Ports Authority Sports Grounds have been the target of government intrigue and malfeasance. Time and space will not permit us to dwell on the shenanigans over Shell Club.

However, as regards Nigerian Ports Authority Sports Grounds it was a lease granted by my late father, Chief J.K. Randle and my uncle, Chief Romanes Adewale Randle to Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) which the tenant/lessee has hijacked and converted into its own property.

The matter has dragged on in court for several decades. Where government has surpassed itself is with regard to our family land at Onikan, Lagos. It was my grandfather, Dr. J.K. Randle who bequeathed the garden (“Love Garden”) when he died in 1928 “… to the people of Lagos for their peaceful enjoyment and recreation”.

He left it in the custody of Lagos Town Council which was subsequently replaced by Lagos City Council (now Lagos Island Local Government). He provided generous funds in his estate for the maintenance of the garden.

During the colonial government, the garden was in pristine condition. The flowers bloomed; and both the rich and the poor were welcome to savour the soothing balm provided by nature in a bold endeavour to connect us with humanity and civilization while lovers, both young and old wandered freely literally “In The Garden of Love” – exchanging furtive kisses, swapping love letters and the occasional outburst of everlasting love, unflinching devotion and eternal fidelity.

The Colonial Government (British) kept faith but no sooner after their departure in 1960, the funds were purloined or diverted by government officials into private pockets. Neglect and decline followed in rapid succession. By the time the military struck on 15th January 1966, the garden was a shadow of its old self.

Subsequently, the military acquired it ostensibly for “public purpose” with the Land Use Act of 1978 as cover but promptly handed it over to a private aorganisation – Musical Society of Nigeria [MUSON]. It is now known as the Muson Centre.

Of course, both the law and morality have combined to point the way to justice and fairness – if the garden would no longer be used for the purpose for which it was donated equity demands that it should be returned to the Randle family.

As for the adjacent property – the Dr. J.K. Randle Swimming Pool that was where several generations of Lagosians learnt how to swim. It bears repetition that my grandfather graduated from Edinburgh University, United Kingdom, in Medicine with a Gold Medal in surgery in 1888. Thereafter, he joined the Colonial Service but resigned on account of racial discrimination. White doctors who were his juniors were being paid higher salaries!!

Today, the World Health Organization (WHO) and over 20 leaders from governments and international organizations agreed and called for action to increase climate resilience of health-care facilities and increase indoor air quality through sustainable energy.  

The Call to Action, focuses on 6 areas based on a Strategic Roadmap to promote healthier populations through clean and sustainable energy to address inequalities and health concerns caused by lack of access for clean cooking and electricity in health care facilities. Actions include: considering clean cooking and access to electricity in health-care facilities development priorities essential to protect public health; dramatically increasing public and private investments in electrifying health-care facilities and in clean cooking; and developing tailored policy and financing schemes to unlock the potential of clean and sustainable energy solutions.

An estimated hundreds of millions of people are served by health facilities lacking electricity. This limits access to essential, lifesaving medical devices and dramatically hampers the quality, accessibility and reliability of health services delivered. 

“It is unacceptable that such a large portion of the population is unable to access adequate health services due to lack of electricity,” said Dr Maria Neira, WHO Director, Department of Environment, Climate Change and Health. “A person’s right to health should not be determined by where they were born, the right to universal health care is our global responsibility.”

Cooking with polluting fuels is also the largest source of black carbon, making it responsible for around half of black carbon emissions globally. 

Unfortunately, lack of access to clean fuels and technologies starts at home. Women and children are exposed to polluted air when dirty fuels are used for cooking, as they spend the most time at home, and suffer additional risk when they have to travel far from home to gather the wood needed to cook.  Accelerating access to clean cooking will not only save millions of lives, it will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions and therefore protect our planet.

The Cellforce Group and Dürr have jointly commissioned a high-tech coating facility for high-performance battery cells in Bietigheim-Bissingen. The Cellforce Group, a joint venture of Porsche and battery specialist CUSTOMCELLS, successfully built up the mass production process for coating its electrodes over the past twelve months, relying on the knowledge, technology, and direct proximity to machinery and plant manufacturer Dürr.

The Cellforce Group (CFG) is using a process from Dürr that enables both sides of the electrode to be coated simultaneously. In this way, the coating process can be accelerated and the precision and quality significantly increased when compared to the standard procedure.

In conventional processes, the anode and cathode materials are not applied simultaneously but rather one after the other on both sides of a thin metal foil.

The technology for the double-sided electrode coating was developed by Dürr’s US subsidiary Megtec, which was acquired in 2018. (Earlier post.)

To commission and establish the process successfully, the Cellforce Group has been on site at Dürr in Bietigheim-Bissingen for several months and has implemented production on a factory line.

The Cellforce Group is currently building a development and production site for battery cells in the Reutlingen-Kirchentellinsfurt industrial park. Once this new site is completed, the production processes set up at Dürr can be taken over and continued directly. To ensure sustainable operation of the coating line, Dürr is also supplying equipment for exhaust air purification and the recovery of more than 99% of the solvents used.

Cellforce Group GmbH (CFG) plans to develop and produce high-performance lithium-ion pouch cells for special automotive applications from 2024. Cellforce is a joint venture in which Porsche AG holds a 72.7% stake, with the remaining shares held by CUSTOMCELLS Holding GmbH. The managing directors are Markus Gräf as Chief Operating Officer (COO) and Wolfgang Hüsken as Chief Financial Officer (CFO). The workforce is expected to grow to up to 100 people by 2025.

Cole Duncan knew track position was going to be everything Saturday on a very slick Fremont Speedway for the 15th annual Jim and Joanne Ford Classic, with the Tezos All Star Circuit of Champions.

The Circleville driver piloted the Sam McGhee Motorsports No. 11 to a dash win that put him on the pole of the shortened 30 lap A main, and other than a couple of challenges in heavy lapped traffic, he scored the $10,000 payday to close out the All Star’s season on Great Lakes Truck Center Night.

By taking the green in hot laps, Tyler Courtney wrapped up his second consecutive All Star title and the $80,000 award. He won Friday at Fremont.

It was the second big payday with the All Stars this season for Duncan, who earned a $15,000 win at Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe. It was his eighth career series win and the seventh victory of his career at Fremont.

He became the third driver to take the Mike McGhee and Associates/XYZ Machining, Lind’s United Auto Glass, Townline Variety, FK Rod Ends, Champion Oil backed machine to a win, joining Parker Price Miller and Anthony Macri.

Duncan built a sizeable lead, until heavy lapped traffic came into play by Lap 10. The first caution flew with just four laps to go, giving Duncan a clear track.

Other than a caution with two laps to go, Duncan utilized the clear track and clean air to drive to the win over Travis Philo, Kyle Reinhardt, who used the last caution to muscle his way to the podium finish, Cole Macedo and Zeb Wise.

“When the track gets like that we were lucky enough to draw the outside of the front row for the dash and it was my job to get a good start and I didn’t want to let these guys down,” Duncan said. “Just so thankful for the opportunity.

“We had a rough patch through the middle of the year and you almost feel like you are washed up, you can’t do anything right. It was a breath of fresh air to come and just be a driver. I love driving my family car and putting in the work on it, but it was really nice and relaxing to just come and drive and we were good from the time we unloaded.”

Philo also finished second to Duncan in a big money race at Atomic earlier this year.

“I had a couple of runs there going into three where I probably could have pushed the issue and that’s generally how I race,” Philo said. “Cole and I race pretty good together. We’ve been doing this for a long time now. Congrats to Cole.”

The Fremont Federal Credit Union 305s were split into odds and evens by track points to run a pair of 20-lap features. In the first A-main, Tyler Shullick led the first 17 laps, but it was sixth starter and track champion Paul Weaver who utilized the middle of the track to take the lead and drive to his seventh win of the year at Fremont.

It was the 71st win of Weaver’s career at the track, placing him third all-time.

“You just have to be smart and not spin your tires,” he said. “Everyone was on the bottom and I just went up a groove.”

Dustin Stroup was first in the other group.

“We just had a miserable year and I don’t know why,” he said. “Last year, we won five features here and all we did was freshen the motor during the offseason. I can’t thank Jimmy and Courtney McGrath enough for putting me in this car.”

Speedway closes its season Friday, with the Stock-Tober special featuring dirt trucks taking on Oakshade Raceway stock cars.

And they know that the substances, which have been linked to cancers, low birth weights and other health problems, can be transmitted by pregnant mothers to their babies in the womb. 

But there is still much that isn’t known about fluorinated compounds, which were invented in the 1930s and have been used widely because of their ability to repel oil, grease and water.

Continued funding from federal government

Learning more about how the chemicals enter the human body will be the focus of study at a PFAS research center at the University of Rhode Island as it continues its work with the help of another five years of funding from the federal government. 

University officials gathered Thursday with members of the congressional delegation and leaders in state government to announce the $8.1-million grant for the Sources, Transport, Exposure and Effects of PFAS, or STEEP, center. 

While drinking water contamination is pervasive, it can’t explain studies showing that nearly all Americans have PFAS in their blood. Food has long been believed to be another pathway for the chemicals to enter the body. A more recent study from the STEEP center pointed to indoor air as a culprit.

But Rainer Lohmann, co-director of the center, said much more research needs to be done to pinpoint sources of contamination by the chemicals. 

“We’re just not sure at this point,” said Lohmann, who co-authored the study on indoor air. “And that’s a little disconcerting.” 

Formed as a partnership between URI, Harvard and the Silent Spring Institute in 2017, the STEEP center set out to shed more light on the health effects of PFAS. The center was created under the federal Superfund Research Program using an $8 million, five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health. It’s that grant that was just renewed. 

Why PFAS are a threat to public health

PFAS compounds don’t break down in the environment over time, thus the “forever chemical” moniker. As the science around the chemicals has advanced, state and federal governments have cracked down. In June, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency released new drinking-water health advisories for two of the most common PFAS compounds. Under the EPA’s new findings, virtually no detectable amounts of PFOA or PFOS are considered safe to consume.

In Rhode Island, Gov. Dan McKee in July signed into law the state’s first-ever drinking water standard for the chemicals. With the law’s enactment, at least six water systems in the state will have to install filtration technology. 

One of the systems supplies URI with its drinking water. University President Marc Parlange said the school is talking to state and federal officials about funding sources to pay for the upgrades. He also urged voters to approve a $100-million bond referendum on the Nov. 8 general election ballot that would be used to build facilities at the school’s Narragansett Bay campus, where the STEEP center is based. 

Terrence Gray, director of the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, said the chemicals are difficult to regulate because there are so many and they’re used in numerous ways. What to do about PFAS inevitably comes up as a topic whenever he meets with his counterparts from other states. 

“The science is still evolving,” he said. “There’s still a lot of work that needs to be done. This is a huge environmental challenge.”

The bipartisan infrastructure law Congress passed last year with the help of Sen. Mitt Romney and the efforts of Rep. John Curtis leading the Conservative Climate Caucus will help Utah address our air quality concerns while positioning our state for continued economic growth.

As one of the original members of the Legislative Clean Air Caucus in the Utah Legislature, I’m grateful to our federal delegation for their commonsense leadership on infrastructure, climate and clean energy issues. 

The new infrastructure law will move critical clean energy technologies forward, which will help improve air quality statewide. In total, the bill invests $28 billion in zero- and low-emissions energy and energy storage. Expanding Utah’s clean energy capabilities will enable us to continue reducing emissions while supporting local businesses up and down the supply chain and creating 21st-century jobs for Utahns. 

The infrastructure law will also help expand our electric vehicle charging infrastructure, which is something I’ve championed in the Legislature — even sponsoring a bill to do just that earlier this year. Doing so will allow zero-emissions EVs to move more freely and easily throughout our state, further cutting emissions that contribute to poor air quality.

During my tenure with the state Legislature, I’ve been proud to either sponsor or cosponsor nearly every air quality bill that passed the Legislature because I believe that a clean environment is fundamental to our health and the quality of life in Utah communities. The bipartisan infrastructure law will enable us to continue cleaning our air and making our communities better places to live, work and play.
