Cameron County Public Health Department

Cameron County on Thursday reported one coronavirus-related deaths and 1,316 positive cases of COVID-19.

According to a report released by the Cameron County Public Health Department, a fully vaccinated Brownsville woman over the age of 90 died as a result of the virus. The reported death raises the total number of COVID-19 deaths in the county to 2,040.

Of the 1,316 positive cases reported in the county, 647 were confirmed reports based on PCR testing and 669 were probable reports based on antigen testing.

The 1,316 people who tested positive in the county are in the following age groups:

The latest guidelines issued by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) states, “Marshals and regional health authorities are entrusted to enforce CAB across the city. The marshals may visit apartment complexes or housing societies without prior notice. The Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and residents should cooperate accordingly. The RWAs can also form internal committees or task forces for effective communication, surveillance and containment of covid.”

The civic body has also asked the RWAs to ensure that all maids, security and other staff are fully vaccinated. “Vendor services, couriers and delivery services ideally should be limited till the main gate to ensure reduced usage of common spaces. It is advised to check and ensure full vaccination status of all visitors. Emergency services like medical, plumbing, electrical, cooking gas and water supply need to be obtained with strict CAB. Ensure all residents are fully vaccinated and also temperature check at entry point,” the guidelines stated.

Disinfecting common areas

According to the guidelines, common areas such as floor, railings and surfaces inside apartment complexes, likely to be touched by multiple people, should be disinfected. “Common areas can be used, subjected to the strict maintenance of CAB. It asked residents to avoid usage of gymnasiums, sports facilities and swimming pools. Operations and allowed numbers shall be strictly as per the guidelines.

Containment strategy

On over three cases being reported from an apartment complex or within 100 m perimetre, the cluster will be declared as “Containment Zone” for a minimum of seven days. Detailed contact tracing and surveillance activities shall be conducted among the residents. All households shall be surveyed for the health of the vulnerable population, the order stated, adding that testing of everyone within the containment zone is advisable.

The BBMP has also asked the RWAs to ensure that no covid positive resident is stigmatised by their neighbours. They can stay in touch with the affected resident/family through cellular mediums and social media.

(BIVN) – There were 3,392 newly reported cases of COVID-19 in the State of Hawaiʻi on Thursday, down from the 3,512 cases reported on Wednesday. Of that number, 162 new cases were identified on Hawaiʻi island, down from the 290 reported the day before. Four (4) deaths with COVID-19 were reported statewide.

Lieutenant Governor Josh Green tweeted today that there are 352 hospitalized with COVID-19 across Hawaiʻi. Of those, 140 are vaccinated, and 37 are in the ICU – which Green says is about half of the rate seen during the Delta variant wave. No one in the ICU is boosted, the Lt. Governor said.

The County of Hawaiʻi says 40 are hospitalized on the Big Island.

Health officials are currently monitoring 3,780 active cases on Hawaiʻi island. The test positivity rate in Hawaiʻi County over the last two-weeks is 19.0%. There has been a 14-day average of 274 new cases per day on the Big Island.

“Please do your part,” said the Hawaiʻi County Civil Defense in a Thursday radio message. “Make it your responsibility to protect your community from coronavirus, and follow the preventive measures of wearing face coverings, distancing, disinfecting your hands, limiting and avoiding gatherings, and staying home, especially when sick.”

“If you feel sick or believe you may have been exposed to a positive case, please get tested,” civil defense added.

The opposition AIADMK on Thursday sought to know how the State government plans to treat the COVID-19 infected, lacking facilities for home isolation and the poor who could not afford pulse oximeters to constantly monitor their oxygen levels. Also, it demanded that the DMK government take steps to establish genome sequencing laboratories in the districts to detect Omicron variants besides ensuring that the COVID-19 test results are provided soon to the people.

Asking the government to spell out its strategy to treat those lacking adequate space for home isolation, leader of the opposition in the Assembly K Palaniswami said, “The people of Tamil Nadu are not clear on what kind of treatment would be given to those with comorbidities contracting the infection.” In a statement, the former Chief Minister said the then AIADMK government launched concrete and concerted measures since the outbreak of the pandemic in Tamil Nadu on March 7, 2020, and contained the contagion.      

“Coronavirus infection remained under control until the announcement of the Assembly elections, as the then AIADMK government took a number of measures to contain the pandemic. People even felt the relief,” Palaniswami said. However, ever since the DMK government took the reins, the pandemic spread rapidly, he alleged. “Tamil Nadu has been hit hard by the Coronavirus third wave now. The number of persons getting infected on December 31, 2021 was 1,155. It rose to 17,934 as of yesterday. Even the death toll is increasing,” he said. Against this backdrop, the Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian on January 11 asked those with mild symptoms and those with oxygen concentration above 92 to isolate themselves at home for 6 to 7 days. He also assured action against private hospitals if they treated infected people in defiance of the government’s announcement, Palaniswami claimed.       

“The then AIADMK government brought the infected people to hospitals by ambulance and discharged them only after ensuring they fully recovered. However, the Health Minister says it is sufficient if the infected gets isolated at home,” he said. Further, during the AIADMK rule, the government then increased the lab facilities across the State and by April 2021, 265 testing centres became operational in Tamil Nadu, the AIADMK co-coordinator said and urged the DMK government to establish genome sequencing labs in the districts to identify Omicron variants.       

Party’s coordinator O Panneerselvam asked the government to take steps to control the third wave by taking up the spraying of disinfectant in affected areas besides ensuring the RT-PCR test results are made available at the earliest. “Of the 39,637 streets in Chennai, over 5,000 streets are affected by Coronavirus and the cases are on the rise,” he said and asked the government to take up the work to disinfect government buses and also public places, as was done by the AIADMK government, to considerably reduce the risk of infection. “I urge Chief Minister M K Stalin to pay special attention to these aspects and also provide RT-PCR test results promptly to mitigate the impact of Coronavirus,” Panneerselvam said.

It is now a legal requirement for all bird keepers across the UK to keep birds indoors, or to take measures to keep them separate from wild birds, due to growing incidents of the avian influenza virus, including a case of transmission to humans.

There are currently 66 cases of the H5N1 virus in England, as well as confirmed cases at five locations in Scotland, three in Wales, and five in Northern Ireland (Defra figures 12/01/22). The outbreak was first reported in October 2021.

Defra has introduced strict biosecurity measures for the trade and is also advising the public not to touch, move or transport sick or dead birds.

With effect from November 29, 2021, poultry keepers must now: house or net all poultry and captive birds to keep them separate from wild birds; minimise direct and indirect contact between poultry and captive birds and wild birds, including making sure all feed and water is not accessible to wild birds; reduce the movement of people, vehicles or equipment to and from areas where poultry and captive birds are kept; clean and disinfect clothing, footwear, equipment and vehicles before and after contact with poultry and captive birds and clean and disinfect housing on a continuous basis.

The first person in the UK to catch the new strain has been named as 79-year-old Alan Gosling, a retired engineer who lived with about 20 ducks inside his home in Devon.

Gosling, who had about another 100 ducks living outside on his property in Buckfastleigh, noticed several birds falling ill in December, according to Devon Live. Subsequent tests by government department Defra were returned positive for the H5N1 strain, and the ducks were killed shortly after Christmas.

Strains of bird flu passing from birds to people is extremely rare, according to the UK Health Security Agency. It usually requires close contact with an infected bird, so the risk to humans is generally considered very low. Avian influenza can affect any bird, but the public is most likely to notice affected waterfowl such as swans, geese and ducks due to their size and visibility.
