SINGAPORE – By about noon on Monday (Aug 29), Grab driver Sabrina Tay had driven eight groups of passengers. All were masked, except a group of boys. When they got in, it made her nervous.

“They told me that from today, they don’t have to wear a mask in the car any more,” Ms Tay, 43, said. “The law changed. I learnt about it over the weekend but it doesn’t change that I have elderly parents at home who are ill and cannot afford to get Covid-19.”

Monday is the first day of Singapore’s change in mask mandate, which has made wearing masks indoors, including in taxis and private-hire cars, optional.

The rule change for taxis and private-hire vehicles has been divisive, going by online chatter, given the confined space and relatively prolonged exposure.

Where previously drivers could turn away those who were maskless, passengers now have the final say.

On Monday, drivers interviewed said about 80 per cent to 90 per cent of the passengers they drove in the morning remained masked.

With time, they expect more and more passengers to do away with masks. There is worry that it will become increasingly uncomfortable for drivers to state their preference as going maskless becomes more normalised.

“The law no longer states they have to. So I can’t really tell them what to do,” cabby Chew Yeow Tay, 57, said. “Once more people are familiar with the new rule, it will become harder for us. All we can do is disinfect but it’s not really of much use.”

Both Grab and Gojek sent out notifications informing users of the rule change, but did not directly address the issue as a potential source of conflict.

Gojek said it still encourages passengers to wear a mask, especially if they feel unwell – following the Land Transport Authority’s official advisory last week.

Grab acknowledged the change, noting that “it’s official” but “if you’d prefer to keep your (mask on), please do so”. On its app, one of the reasons that passengers can select as a reason for cancelling trips is that the driver is not masked.

As both drivers and passengers get used to the new arrangement, those interviewed said there should be an implicit agreement that the party who is not wearing a mask does so if the other is wearing one.

This applies to both passenger and driver, said cabby Kasbari Marmijan, 73, who pulls up his mask from his chin if his passengers are wearing one.

His chief concern is not Covid-19, but passenger complaints.

“Some people got Covid-19 last time and said they might have got it in my car,” he added. He keeps a physical copy of his vaccination certificate in case passengers ask if he has been jabbed.

“It’s super hygienic too as when you’re done you will just flush it away.”

How to clean limescale from your toilet

Limescale can build up on the inside of your toilet, particularly if you live in an area with a hard water supply.

Speaking previously to Express.co.uk, Adela Baker, a cleaning expert at Maid Brigade UK explained that limescale in toilets is “almost impossible to avoid”.

However, there is a low-cost method which could help to cut through the stain. Angela said: “A cheap and effective way to clean your toilet without using harmful products is pouring half a litre of white vinegar into your toilet and leaving it overnight.

“For quicker results, you can add baking powder.”

Then just clean your toilet as normal to scrub the limescale away with a bathroom sponge and toilet brush.

Mr. Mow it All

Messiah Lifeways in Mechanicsburg, PA, is addressing workforce challenges head-on with the help of robots. A robotic vacuum and a robotic lawnmower — affectionately called Roving Rosie and Mr. Mow It All, respectively — joined the team at the continuing care retirement community earlier this summer.

Roving Rosie is a Makita Robo Pro, which has the battery power to clean approximately 5,380 square feet of hard flooring or continuously work for up to 200 minutes. Mr. Mow It All is a Husqvarna Automower that can mow up to 145 minutes or 1,430 square feet per hour.

The robots are not meant to replace human workers, Senior Director of Campus Services Chris Weidenhammer told the McKnight’s Business Daily. 

“If we can free up some additional time mowing, for instance, [workers] can focus on other areas like trimming bushes, trimming trees or that type of thing,” he explained.

The use of robots is a pilot project at Messiah Lifeways. 

“We’re seeing, first of all, if they work. Secondly, if they work for us here at Messiah, is it worth investing in future technology?” Weidenhammer said.

The CCRC purchased a small model lawnmower to test out the technology, he said. Mr. Mow It All can mow approximately an acre on a single charge before returning itself to the charging station. It heads back out when fully charged. With 80 acres of property, if Messiah Lifeways decides to continue with the robots, a larger mower would be needed in the future, Weidenhammer said.

Mr. Mow it All has several safety features, he noted. The device will shut itself off if it comes in contact with a person or pet. The blades themselves are made of plastic, not metal, Weidenhammer added.

Roving Rosie’s vacuuming responsibilities are confined to public areas — meeting spaces, executive offices, the enrichment center, and the restaurant areas — when they are not in use. 

“There’s no one in those areas when the vacuum is working,” Weidenhammer said. “We’re very careful about where we run the vacuum. We don’t run it in any areas that are traversed by the residents or visitors” because of the potential tripping hazard.

While Roving Rosie works its assigned areas, housekeeping staff members can clean and disinfect in residential areas, he said.

“The idea is not to reduce the number of employees we have. It is simply to assist,” Weidenhammer said.

“Given what we know about other orthopoxviruses, it would be wise to assume pets might catch monkeypox too, and accordingly, take appropriate measures to prevent infection or disease spread.” said Lori Teller, DVM, president of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).

What Are the Symptoms of Monkeypox in Pets? 

Researchers don’t know all the symptoms that infected animals may have, but you can watch out for signs such as:

• Lethargy
• Lack of appetite
• Coughing
• Nasal or eye secretions or crust
• Bloating
• Fever
• Skin rash

“As the disease progresses, some animals may develop a pimple or blister-like rash, while others may not,” Teller said.

What Should You Do if Your Pet Is Showing Symptoms? 

Call your veterinarian if your pet appears sick within 21 days of having contact with a person who may have been infected with monkeypox.

If your pet had close contact with a symptomatic person, you should keep the pet at home and away from other people for 21 days after the most recent contact.

Don’t wipe or bathe your pet with chemical disinfectants, alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or other products, such as hand sanitizer, counter-cleaning wipes, or other industrial or surface cleaners.

Teller said minimizing contact between potentially infected pets and people is especially important for those who are “immunocompromised, pregnant, younger than 8 years old, and those who have a history of atopic dermatitis or eczema.”

How Can You Protect Your Pet If You’re Infected With Monkeypox?

If you’re infected with monkeypox, but had no close contact with your pet before symptom onset, try to ask a friend or family member to take care of your pet in a separate home until you’re fully recovered.

If that’s not an option and you have to care for your healthy pet at home, you should always wash your hands and use alcohol-based sanitizers before and after caring for them. You should also cover any skin rash with clothing and wear personal protective equipment, such as a well-fitting mask and gloves.

The CDC also recommends the following precautions:

• Do not put a mask on your pet.
• Avoid close contact with your pet.
• Ensure your pet cannot inadvertently come into contact with contaminated articles in the home such as clothing, sheets, and towels used by the person with monkeypox.
• Do not let animals come into contact with rashes, bandages, and body fluids.
• Ensure food, toys, bedding, or other items that you provide for your animal during its isolation do not come in direct contact with skin or uncovered rash.

It’s enough to leave you worried and wondering whether you’re at risk of getting randomly infected by the virus. How exactly does monkeypox spread? And is this another COVID-19 situation?

For answers, we turn to infectious disease specialist Kristin Englund, MD.

How monkeypox spreads

Monkeypox can be transmitted in a number of different ways, but it’s most commonly passed between people through skin-to-skin contact, explains Dr. Englund.

A primary symptom of the disease is a skin rash that builds into pus-filled blisters before crusting over. You’re at risk of getting monkeypox if you touch or rub against those sores or scabs on a person who is infected.

The virus can also spread through bodily fluids exchanged during more intimate and prolonged physical contact, such as kissing, cuddling or sex.

“In general, it’s going to take close contact for monkeypox to be spread,” says Dr. Englund.

Is monkeypox spread through the air?

Monkeypox isn’t considered an airborne virus spread through a cough, sneeze or talking. But research on that is ongoing, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

“At this point, we don’t believe it’s being passed through respiratory secretions like we talked about so much with COVID-19,” says Dr. Englund.

As a precaution, though, the CDC recommends that people with monkeypox wear a mask when in close contact with others while isolating at home. Ditto for those near the person who is infected for more than a brief encounter.

Can you get monkeypox from a contaminated object?

It’s possible … but this answer deserves a more detailed explanation to really understand the potential risk, says Dr. Englund.

Let’s start with the basics: The CDC reports that the monkeypox virus can survive as long as 15 days on surfaces. That’s not a surprise. Other viruses closely related to monkeypox have been found to survive in an environment for weeks or even months.

But here’s the question: Does that present a high risk to you as you go through your daily activities?

The answer: It’s doubtful.

“Monkeypox isn’t something that’s spreading from handling mail or going to the grocery store and putting your hands on a cart,” notes Dr. Englund. “It’s going to take more prolonged and more direct contact for the virus to be shared.”

Now, if you’re living with someone with monkeypox, the risk level obviously rises and it’s best to be cautious. The CDC recommendations include:

• Not handling bedding, towels or clothing of a person who’s infected. (All of those items would have been in contact with sores or scabs.)
• Not sharing eating utensils or cups with someone who has monkeypox.
• Regularly washing and disinfecting items and surfaces in direct contact with a person’s infected skin. (Consider steam cleaning soft surfaces such as furniture, rugs, carpets and mattresses if there was prolonged contact.)
• Wearing gloves when cleaning or handling potentially contaminated areas or items.
• Keeping your hands clean by using an alcohol-based hand rub (preferred) or soap and water.

Tips to avoid monkeypox

The CDC offers three basic recommendations to protect yourself during the monkeypox outbreak:

1. Avoid skin-to-skin contact with anyone who has a rash that looks like monkeypox. (Learn more about monkeypox and safe sex guidelines.)
2. Avoid contact with clothing, blankets, eating utensils, cups and other items used by someone with monkeypox.
3. Wash your hands often.

Animal-to-person transmission

Believe it or not, the current outbreak is the second reported in the United States. The first occurred in 2003, with 47 cases reported in the Midwest. (That was the first time human monkeypox was found outside of Africa, where the disease was discovered in 1958.)

All of the 2003 cases stemmed from contact with pet prairie dogs, which were infected after being housed near animals imported from Ghana that had the virus.

A person can get monkeypox from an infected animal through:

• Bites.
• Scratches.
• Contact with sores, blood or bodily fluids.

It should be noted, too, that there has been a reported case of a human giving their pet dog monkeypox. Dr. Englund says it’s recommended that anyone with monkeypox stay away from household pets while infected.

Is there a monkeypox vaccine?

There is a monkeypox vaccine, but supplies are extremely limited. Given the low supplies, the CDC recommends that available monkeypox vaccines be directed to people who’ve been exposed to the virus or are more likely to get the virus.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) took action in August to change how the vaccine is administered to increase the number of available doses.

Monkeypox has also been seen in a somewhat limited group — primarily, men who have sex with men — during the outbreak. But it should also be noted that the disease isn’t limited to one population.

“At this point in time, though, the general population does not need to go out and get the monkeypox vaccine,” says Dr. Englund.

Is monkeypox a COVID-19 situation?

In a word, no. “Monkeypox is not nearly as easily spread as COVID-19,” states Dr. Englund. “We’re not looking at a repeat of what we’ve been living through with the pandemic over the last few years.”

Still, she emphasizes that it’s important to be aware of monkeypox and whether there are elevated case counts in your community. “Educate yourself on the risks,” she advises, “but it’s not something that should bring a panic.”

Monkeypox continues to spread across the country, jumping up by several hundred cases a day, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Nine children have also been diagnosed with the virus.

Health officials urge people who suspect they may have monkeypox to get tested and isolate if they test positive. And, while you’re probably familiar on some level with quarantine and isolation due to COVID-19, things are a little different for monkeypox.

So, what are monkeypox quarantine and isolation guidelines? Here’s what you need to know.

When to quarantine with monkeypox

Just a quick recap on infectious disease lingo, per the CDC: Quarantine is what someone does when they’ve had a known exposure to an illness; Isolation is what you do when you have a confirmed infection.

The CDC does not have official quarantine recommendations on what to do if you’ve been exposed to someone with monkeypox or if you suspect you have the virus. “Be very careful to avoid skin-to-skin contact with other people during this time,” says William Schaffner, M.D., infectious disease specialist and professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. “This is a virus that is transmitted most readily in that circumstance.”

If you’ve had close contact with someone with monkeypox but haven’t developed symptoms, you can also try to get the monkeypox vaccine to try to prevent yourself from getting sick, says Thomas Russo, M.D., professor and chief of infectious disease at the University at Buffalo in New York.

When to isolate with monkeypox

If you have a confirmed case of monkeypox, the CDC recommends that you isolate at home or another location to avoid spreading the virus to other people.

If you have a fever or any respiratory symptoms, including a sore throat, nasal congestion, or cough, the CDC says you stay isolated at home and away from other people and animals unless you need to see a doctor or have an emergency. If you need to leave your home, the CDC suggests that you cover the lesions, wear a well-fitting mask, and avoid public transportation.

If you have a rash but no fever or respiratory symptoms, the CDC suggests that you cover the rash with clothes, gloves, or bandages and wear a well-fitting mask when you interact with others to avoid spreading oral and respiratory secretions.

Until you’re symptom-free, the CDC recommends that you do the following in isolation:

• Don’t share items that you’ve worn or handled, like linens and towels.
• Avoid close physical contact, including sexual and close intimate contact with other people.
• Don’t share utensils or cups.
• Avoid crowds.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.

The CDC also offers up a few more tips online, including:

• Avoid using contact lenses to avoid accidentally infecting your eye.
• Try to avoid shaving rash-covered areas of your body, since it could cause the virus to spread.
• If possible, use a separate bathroom from other people in your household. (If you don’t have a separate bathroom, clean and disinfect surfaces after you’re done using it.)

“If someone shares a house with someone without monkeypox, they really have to refrain mostly from close contact with another because it is not a very contagious infectious disease,” says Amesh A. Adalja, M.D., a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security.

How long is monkeypox isolation?

The CDC notes that people can spread monkeypox from the time symptoms start until all symptoms have resolved. Since the illness can last anywhere from two to four weeks, you could be in isolation for a while.

Technically, you’re still infectious “until those lesions scab over and fall off,” Dr. Russo says, and the exact timeline for that is different for everyone.

“The isolation period of monkeypox varies depending upon the individual,” Dr. Adalja says. “It is basically for the duration that the rash is present.”

In general, “when your skin looks normal again or virtually normal,” you should be OK to leave isolation, Dr. Schaffner says.

After years of living through the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced it would be streamlining its COVID-19 guidance to help people better understand their risk, how to protect themselves and others, what actions to take if exposed to COVID-19, and what to do if they catch the virus.

“COVID-19 continues to circulate globally, however, with so many tools available to us for reducing COVID-19 severity, there is significantly less risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death compared to earlier in the pandemic,” the CDC said.

The new guidelines include:

1. Changing guidance for people who are not up to date on COVID-19 vaccines to be the same as the guidance for those who are up to date on vaccines.
2. Instead of quarantining if exposed to COVID-19, you should wear a high-quality mask for 10 days and get tested on day five.
3. Regardless of vaccination status, you should isolate from others if you have COVID-19. Once your results are negative, you can end your isolation.
4. If you test positive for COVID-19, you should stay home for at least five days and isolate from others in your home (avoid being around people who are more likely to get very sick from COVID-19 until at least day 11, and wear a high-quality mask through day 10).
5. If you had moderate or severe illness from COVID-19 or a weakened immune system, isolate through day 10. Consult your doctor before ending isolation if you had a severe illness.
6. After you have ended isolation, if your symptoms worsen, restart your isolation at day 0.
7. Testing of asymptomatic people without known exposures should no longer be recommended in most community settings.

But while the CDC may be recommending that precautions around COVID-19 start winding down, a new virus has emerged: Monkeypox.

Monkeypox is a disease that can cause flu-like symptoms and a rash. Human-to-human transmission occurs through direct contact with lesions or infected body fluids, or from exposure to respiratory secretions during prolonged face-to-face contact.

The CDC has yet to release recommended community guidelines for slowing the spread of Monkeypox, leaving retailers wondering how exactly they should handle known cases.

Recommendations for congregate settings (assisted living facilities, dorms, etc.) can, however, offer some basic guidance:

1. Communicate with staff if there is an outbreak.
2. Identify people who might have been exposed to Monkeypox through contact tracing.
3. Ensure access to handwashing.
4. Clean and disinfect areas where people with Monkeypox spent time, and avoid activities that could spread dried material from lesions (use of fans, dry dusting, sweeping, or vacuuming).

While these recommendations might be a good start, there are still considerations unique to retail that have yet to be addressed. Should employees wear gloves? Should dressing rooms be closed?
