MERIDIAN TWP. — Officials have issued a boil water advisory for East Lansing Meridian Water & Sewer Authority customers after a water supply main break Thursday morning.

The boil water advisory began Thursday morning and will continue until at least 10 a.m. Saturday as a precautionary measure after the main break was discovered at the northwest corner of Haslett Road and Park Lake Road, according to a township press release.

The break was isolated and is being repaired and customer water pressure is being restored, according to the release.

Residents should bring tap water to a rolling boil, boil it for one minute and cool before use, or they should use bottled water under the advisory.

Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth and preparing food until further notice. Showering, laundry, cleaning and other non-consumption uses without boiling water is safe, according to the release.

The water will need to be tested before the boil water advisory can be lifted in accordance with the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy.

The East Lansing Police Department also issued an advisory shortly after 11:15 a.m. Thursday to avoid the Haslett Road and Park Lake Drive intersection until about 9:15 p.m. as there might be delayed traffic or road closures in the area.

The Coimbatore Corporation has planned to increase the frequency of drinking water supply to households in the city.

Corporation Commissioner M. Prathap said “there are some leakage issues in the water pipeline which will be rectified on a war-footing. Once the leakages are rectified, the corporation is planning to provide drinking water supply weekly once.” Earlier, the corporation had increased the frequency of water supply from 15 days to 10 days. 

“Since the start of the South-West Monsoon, there is not much rainfall in the catchment areas of Siruvani. In course of time, if we get good amount of water from Siruvani and from all the three Pilloor water projects, we can provide drinking water even once in two days by next year.” said Mr. Prathap. The construction work for Pilloor-3 project is ongoing at a fast pace and is expected to be completed in March 2023, he added.

He said that the civic body has recovered nearly 15 reserve sites in the last 10 days. All the reserve sites that are occupied will be recovered soon.

The civic body is expecting an excess tax revenue of around ₹200 crore to ₹300 crore per annum, from the new property tax regime that is going to be implemented from July 1, he said.

The key to Living Vehicle’s latest off-grid superpower is the Watergen atmospheric water generator (AWG). Originally a military-grade technology, Watergen’s AWG system pulls atmospheric moisture in with a fan, extracts it via condensation, runs it through a multi-step filtration and purification process, and dispenses clean water as conveniently as a water cooler or tap.

We previously saw Watergen’s mobile water-generation tech on a concept car and concept overland truck, but Living Vehicle’s system represents the first production-vehicle application of a Watergen RV system. Unlike the OnBoard system Watergen is developing as a more general RV solution, the proprietary system custom-developed for the Living Vehicle does not have a roof intake, which could interfere with the trailer’s roof-mounted solar array. Instead, it pulls air in through a wall vent.

The Watergen AWG system is further integrated with the Living Vehicle’s existing hardware, running off the solar-connected battery system and delivering excess water into the 379-L onboard fresh water tank. It can generate up to 19 liters of water a day, plenty for a family drinking 2 to 4 liters per person each day (the Living Vehicle sleeps up to six people). Because Watergen’s system automatically filters and purifies, the water can be used for drinking and cooking without further treatment at the tap.

It’s not uncommon for off-grid campers or boats to include water “making” capabilities. Such systems usually take the form of intakes that pull water in from a natural lake or stream before purifying it to a potable standard. Systems designed to process salt water also desalinate the water. Rugged off-road/grid RVs like the Bruder EXP-6 trailer and Bliss Mobil truckable expedition module have such options.

In contrast, Watergen’s system uses moisture that’s virtually omnipresent everywhere you go, promising a higher level of convenience and capability. Users no longer have to track down an existing water source and can instead harvest water wherever they camp or homestead. Watergen’s system does require humidity levels of 20 percent or more, but even the driest cities in the US have an average humidity of 30+ percent (though it does drop below 20 percent at times during the year).

The Watergen AWG joins the recently announced Apple-powered Creative Studio remote office package on the 2023 Living Vehicle’s options list. The company tells us the Watergen system will cost US$25,995, and, as we previously reported, the Creative Studio will tack on $23,995. That’s a pretty quick $50K if you want the very latest in off-grid living and telecommuting.

The base price for the Living Vehicle itself rises to $339,995 for 2023. This week’s announcement does not mention any other major changes for the new model year.

For the 16th consecutive summer, selected beaches in the Copper Country will be monitored regularly for water quality.

The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department and the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community will team up again to check e coli bacteria levels. Results will be posted to the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy’s BeachGuard website.

The BeachGuard site includes reports from more than 1,800 beaches from across the state.

E coli is typically introduced into the water via fecal matter, either from aquatic birds, or from storm runoff. 

Local sites typically monitored by the Health Department include L’Anse Waterfront Park in Baraga County; Agate Beach, Chassell Beach, Dollar Bay Beach, Hancock Beach, Houghton Beach, Calumet Waterworks Park, McLain State Park and Twin Lakes State Park in Houghton County; Eagle Harbor Beach and the Lake Fanny Hooe Campground in Keweenaw County, and the Ontonagon Township Park on Lake Superior.

The KBIC provides additional monitoring of beaches on the Reservation.

Forced to process water through its costly to operate nitrate removal plant, Des Moines Water Works is asking customers to hold down demand by following a voluntary lawn watering schedule.

The schedule calls for:

• Limiting watering to properties with even-numbered addresses on Sundays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
• Limiting watering to odd-numbered addresses on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.
• No watering on Mondays.
• No watering on any day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., when temperatures are highest.

The water works activated the nitrate removal plant for the first time in five years on June 7 as levels of the pollutant exceeded 9 milligrams per liter, just below the 10-milligram level the federal government deems hazardous to human health. Water works CEO Ted Corrigan said the plant costs up to $10,000 a day to run.

In the recent heat wave, water consumption has climbed toward 80 million gallons a day, much of it for lawn irrigation, the water works said in a news release Wednesday. Though the water levels in the Raccoon and Des Moines rivers are well above lows reached a year ago — the last time the water works had to ask for watering restraint — the utility said it has had to tap into emergency supplies, including Maffitt Reservoir and Crystal Lake, to blend with the river water and dilute the nitrates to safe levels.

“We want to continue to be able to provide enough safe drinking water for our customers,” Corrigan said in a statement. “While water quantities in the rivers are plentiful, elevated nitrate levels make it a challenge to meet customer demands. We need customers’ assistance so the safe water we produce is available for consumption, not going onto lawns.”

The water works has sought to require regulation of the source of the nitrates — runoff from upstream farms and livestock operations — but lost a legal battle in federal court in 2015.

In 2021, American Rivers, an influential Washington, D.C., environmental advocacy nonprofit, named the Raccoon River to its annual list of the 10 most endangered American rivers. But later that year, the Iowa Supreme Court halted a lawsuit by environmental groups that called for state regulatory oversight of farm runoff in to the river, contending that Iowa’s voluntary program encouraging farmers to adopt conservation measures was insufficient.

The court’s majority in its opinion acknowledged the suit described “a real environmental problem.” But it said that to “hold the state responsible” goes “beyond the accepted role of courts” and “would entangle us in overseeing the political branches of government.”

People in flood-hit Kurigram district are suffering increasingly due to lack of pure drinking water, food and sanitation.

Though water levels of almost all rivers have subsided to a large extent, some are still flowing above the danger mark.

Still two lakh people in nine upazilas of the district are homeless. While some people have taken refuge in a number of temporary shelter homes, others are in makeshift tents on the roadside, reports UNB.

According to the District Relief and Rehabilitation Centre, 1.41 lakh people have been rendered homeless. On the other hand, some 361 shelter homes have been set up in the district.

Some 160 people have taken shelter in three temporary homes in Nageshwari upazila, officials said.

Besides, 325 educational institutions have been closed due to the worsening flood situation in the district.

The government has distributed some relief materials in the flood-affected areas but not enough to cater to the homeless people.

Zohra Khatun, a resident of Bhagabatipur in Sadar upazila, said, “My entire house has gone under water. We are starving.”

Amir Hossain, a resident of Begumganj in Ulipur upazila, said, “My goats and cattle are without food.”

Saidur Rahman, chairman of Bhogdanga union, said 5,841 families under the union have been rendered homeless but only 700 have received relief materials so far.

Abdullah Al Mamun, executive magistrate of Kurigram Water Development Board, said the flood waters have started receding.

The Brahmmaputra river was flowing 53cm above the danger mark at Chilmari point and 19 cm above the red line at Nunkhawa point, while the Dharla river was flowing 41 cm above the danger mark at Setu point.

Rezaul Karim, deputy commissioner of the district, said that already 338 metric tonnes of rice, Tk 16.50 lakh in cash, 1,000 dry food packets, 18.95 lakh baby food packets and fodder worth Tk 17.75 lakh have been allocated for the nine upazilas of the district. “The process to distribute the same is underway.”

The Wausau Water Works Commission on Monday approved implementing granular activated carbon (GAC) technology in city’s filtration system in response to PFAS discovered in all six of the city’s drinking water wells.

The commission also directed city staff to develop a financial plan based upon potential funding sources thatincludes an interim financing plan to fund the project. The GAC technology, cited as a long-term solution for PFAS contamination in the city’s drinking water, would take 18-24 months to complete. A special meeting was held Monday to discuss funding strategies for managing and removing PFAS in Wausau’s drinking water system and to discuss the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s recently revised health advisory for drinking water. That level, announced last week, has been set at near zero levels for PFAS.

The funding plan, presented by Ehlers Public Finance Advisors firm, shows the estimated cost of the project at $16 million, with $5 million each expected from congressional funding for fiscal year 2023 and the Wisconsin’s Safe Drinking Water Facility loan program.

But state and federal funding is not guaranteed. The plan still has a shortfall of $6 million, prompting a discussion on whether changes in water rates could address the gap. That resulted in a plan for interim financing in the policy adopted by the Wausau Water Works Commission.

The EPA announced last Wednesday that PFAS contaminants, also called ‘forever chemicals,’ are far more toxic than previously thought.

The agency said that of the two of the most commonly-cited PFAS chemicals, PFOA and PFOS, the former likely causes cancer, even at much lower levels than earlier advisories warned. The EPA lowered the interim health advisory levels for lifetime exposure from a combined 70 parts per trillion (PPT) to .004 ppt for PFOA and .02 ppt for PFOS.

Commissioner John Robinson suggested the city move to install the technology in light of the most recent advisory. The GAC technology was also discussed during the commission’s meeting two weeks ago.

“I think it’s in everyone’s interest to move ahead with GAC,” Robinson said, instead of waiting for the uncertain federal or state funding.

Robinson suggested that instead of waiting for a federal regulatory standard set by the EPA, the city “should get ahead of those numbers.”

Mayor Katie Rosenberg, who has initiated a number of measures including providing bottled drinking water and pitchers to residents of the city once high PFAS levels were detected in the city’s wells, agreed with the approach.

“GAC seems to be the best solution to get us to the non-detectable level as quickly as possible,” said Rosenberg, who is also president of the water commission.

Rosenberg said when Wausau’s new drinking water facility becomes operational at the end of the summer, the PFAS level will be brought down to about 15 PPT.

“That was our goal as a policy body when we first found about PFAS,” she said.

Director of the Department of Public Works and Utilities (DPW), Eric Lindman also said the city will meet the initial goals.

“Our goal was to bring PFAS down to 20 PPT as soon as possible,” Lindman said, adding “we are able to do that.” When the new plant does go online, it will reduce PFAS from “what we have by about a half. It will be around 12-15 PPT on an average basis,” he said.

But that new drinking water facility’s filtration method as designed will not be able to meet the new EPA standard, he told the commissioners, until a new treatment with GAC technology is implemented.

“I just want to set the expectations for the public,” he said

The staff will work to reduce the timeline for 18-24 months, he added.

But Lindman, who has been accused by some city leaders and residents of downplaying the risks posed by PFAS chemicals, repeatedly said that the EPA health advisory numbers could change again.

“Health advisory levels are usually set below what the ultimate standard ends up being,” he said, adding those are undetectable levels and are still under review.
